Hi everyone,
Does anyone know of a gym that I can go to in the Gajwa area (Incheon)? I could get to Bupyeong at a push or any other close-by district. I am not sure if gyms are separated for men and women - I really don't care if it's mixed - I just want to work out in the week after school etc. I'd really appreciate any suggestions.
Thank you! |

Can we please stop making posts about where gyms are in certain areas? This is getting done to death, along with protein powder threads.
5 years ago, it was a relevant question to ask about gyms. But Koreans have jumped on the gym club bandwagon and they're all over the place now. I guarantee, as long as you don't live out in the sticks, anywhere you live there will be at least 2 within walking distance.
Go for a walk in your dong or neighborhood. Look for signs that say 헬스클럽 (health club) or just 헬스 (health.) You'll find them, trust me.
As for what you consider to be "good" or not is completely subjective. Most Korean gyms are going to be cardio centered. This means lots of tredmills and lots of eliptical machines. There are more Western style gyms that focus on weight machines and free weights more, but you'll never know if they do unless you go inside one and look around.
And don't put on your big boy pants and proclaim you only want a place with free weights. You're not going to outgrow the weight machines any time soon. I know 240 pound body builders back home that still work out on the weight machines. Most of the spindly armed waygooks I see around here aren't going to out lift them.
So there. Let's end this right now. Where is a "good" gym in your area? Go out and look for one. Use google maps or daum maps if you need to. Stop using this forum for over-asked and over-answered ridiculous questions. |

I've yet to find a nice elliptical machine in Incheon. All I've found are the cheapo light-weight manual ones.
There are health clubs aplenty, but it would be nice to find a state-of-the-art one. Those I've been to seem like a throwback to a gym in 1950s America. The machines are probably that old! |

Hahaha, that's because you're supposed to make it go. Do you want it to just do the work for you?
You don't need a gym of new and shiny equipment to get really fit. For two years in Wangsimni (which is an old, run down area of Seoul) I worked out in an old gym that looked like something Arnold would have sweat in filming Pumping Iron. Exercise is the same, regardless of how old the equipment is. I've known people to fill plastic bottles with sand and get ripped using those. Don't make excuses that the gym isn't nice enough or the equipment isn't new enough for you. Even if you found an LA fitness or a Ballys or even a Golds, you'll find more excuses.
Change will happen only when the pain of staying the same becomes greater than the pain of changing.
Once you reach that point, it wont make any difference how nice your gym is, you'll make it work. |

Hi Weso1,
Firstly, I am new in S.Korea so I don't know the area too well and I am building up confidence here gradually. Secondly, I am female and I was unsure if Korean gyms were open for men and women. I think you were a bit harsh there - I checked Google maps - I was just looking for some advice. |

I know that all ellipticals are manual, but not rickety pieces of junk. I phrased it poorly. These things look like something that will fold up and go under your bed. I worked out a ton back home, but the gyms were nice. LA Fitness, Bally's, and Gold's aren't great (I worked out at the Reebok Sports Club and Equinox, so, yeah, I went to nicer health clubs but went at least thrice weekly [and ran along the river on the off days.] I wouldn't have gone as often if the clubs were skanky,) but I'd take them in a heartbeat over the garbage that I find here.
This is what I like to use:

This is what I tend to find here:

Exercise isn't the same. Because of this, I've switched to free weights, jumping rope, and taekwondo. When I'm home, I'll rejoin my old gym and my joints will thank me for having stopped all of that high-impact jumping.
Some people might be content being manly, catching scabies and ringworm at manky gyms. I prefer trays of lemon water and using wiped down machines that were made in the last decade. For now, I'll stick to jumping rope and free weights, unless anyone knows of a nice gym in Incheon. |

Oh, well excuse me princess.
This is why I don't like American women. They're too high maintenance. |

Wanting to avoid scabies (something that I once caught at a gym) isn't high maintenance. |

Just go for a run and then do some sit ups and press ups when you get back, problem solved. |

There are actually gyms there where they rent out clothes to you. I thought that was odd, but they actually lend you the clothes and they wash em.
Towels, I'll probably use, but gym clothes from the gym?
