I remember seeing a website for people living in Korea with an F-2 visa, but I can't recall the name of it.

Does anyone know if it still exists, and if so, what's it called?

You know, I'm not really sure. I believe all F visa holders can join, but honestly, I'm not admin there so I don't know (I should probably read the rules there).

Isn't there another one as well, weigook or something? Is that also for F visa holders?

AFEK is a pretty good site, lots of info and stuff for f visa people, waygook.org is a good resource site for materials and info for english teachers

Dunno about the F visa site captain k is talking about but I would be hesitant to give details when he's the only person I've ever seen promoting it, maybe he got pissed with AFEK and is starting his own thing? would be interesting to have knowledge of it?

From what I could find, AFEK had a lot of recommendations bouncing round the web and community, most of the f visa sites require some sort of proof of status so yeah.

Nope, not my forum. Just one of many I'm a member of. Thought I'd put it up here as an option.

Interesting point...

One of the reasons AFEK was so successful in the beginning was due to me coming out with my own name, and not being some anonymous person asking for peoples ID's. Over the past 2 years, nobody has complained about ID's being abused, so that kinda puts us in a strong position now Wink

This other site is NOT owned by CC, but I do know all about it. The owner was annoyed with AFEK, solicited AFEK members to join by PM, and allowed them to bypass the id requirements seeing as how I had checked them. As sneaky as that may be, it only goes to show how trusted AFEK is when it comes to checking ID's and keeping data secure Very Happy

As well as being a 'real' group, benefiting members both online and offline, AFEK is a registered entity in Korea. If I were to ever do anything bad with members ID's, legal recourse is an easy option. You could come after my business, and as I am the sole proprietor, my (owned) home could be yours too. I'm not about to do anything silly Wink

Of course... if you prefer... you can send your ID to the anonymous admin guy on that other site and be part of a community with under 5% of the members AFEK has.

Yup, if memory serves, 'Scouse Mouse' and 'Chicken Lover' seemed to be the driving forces behind starting up AFEK. I was originally warry of joining, as it seemed to be nothing more than an Anti-ATEK group, but I think it's grown way beyond that.

The poster 'crossmr' is the one setting up this new site. Not sure that it's really any different than AFEK.. perhaps just another option.

In regards to giving up your ARC card and such, I'm pretty sure both sites accept 'redacted' (blacked out) versions. That was not really anything I was worried about in joining AFEK or anything, but I thought it was a nice touch. No real worry for info getting out then. Just more about making sure you're a real person.

Anyone who's been in Korea for any amount of time remembers that there have been a number of expat sites over the years. Some come... many go. I've joined most of them, but honestly can't remember them all. I usually join in the beginning to get a feel for the place, but whether one keeps posting or not is a different matter. Heck, I even joined Korean Sentry... but didn't last long there. lol

That's not what I meant...

When I started AFEK, I introduced myself as Mike Yates. My ARC was posted on the AFEK site as an example (showing my initials and DOB), and my eslcafe profile included the tagline "I am Mike Yates" as my location.

There was no anonymity on my part. I waived all rights to anonymity when I started asking people to send their ARCs to me.

And AFEK was NEVER an anti-ATEK group... At least not in my mind.

Ok, man. But correct me if I'm wrong... Ppl don't have to give you their complete ARC, right? They can just send one that been edited and such.

As for the anti-ATEK, well, that's a matter of perspective I suppose. I seem to recall that being a big part of AFEK (and the discussion around it) at the beginning. If you say it isn't so, so be it.

Yeah, it can be edited (though most people don't bother).

If you are going to call AFEK an anti-ATEK site simply bcause some people discuss ATEK in a negative light, then I have to wonder why you choose to pick up on a negative aspect of the site that probably makes up less than 1% of the total discussion. I mean... we have also had ATEK officers as members, so it could just as easily be described as a pro-ATEK site.

So... AFEK... the anti/pro- ATEK/beer/food/family/marriage/shopping/socialising/work/music/travel/etc. site would have been a more accurate description (though most of those other things should be ranked before ATEK, as the level of discussion about ATEK is insignificant).

It is a diverse site. There are a lot of opinions and experiences being shared. AFEK isn't pro or anti anything, though the members certainly have their own opinions.

Sorry, Scouse, but if you look at my original point on that, I've said it's gone way beyond that now. But from early on, at least from the posts regarding it on this forum, that was definitely the vibe it gave off. If I recall, wasn't there a massive thread (not the newer one) in the teaching section here regarding ATEK and such... and Chicken seemed to be leading the way on that? As well, you're being disingenuous if you're not going to admit that you yourself were 'battling it out' with one of the founders of ATEK. There's no need to get into the details here, but come on, man... you seriously can't expect to not think that's a part of AFEK.

Honestly though, I'm guessing that it's been months since that time and the thread is long gone. But come on, I can't be the first/only to see the "connection" between AFEK and ATEK.

Nope. You're being obtuse. Sure, I was being sued by an ATEK founder. I was also working for a publishing company. Does that mean AFEK was a site for people working for publishing companies? I was also a relative newlywed with 1 kid. Perhaps that means AFEK is an association for newlyweds with 1 kid. Or perhaps... Just perhaps... AFEK is exactly what it purports to be, nobody has been duped, and you are using innuendo to create confusion because you are one of a handful of people who decided that AFEK isn't for you.

You acknowledge that AFEK is way more than it was when it started, but you are deliberately misleading people about how it was started. Give me a single example of how AFEK has ever been anti-ATEK. Not me. Not individual members. AFEK.

It was never anti-ATEK. It isn't anti-anything.
