Great, in about eight years time, when it's time replace your Chevy Volt you can drive it straight to the wreakers for recycling, because unless you plan buying an $8000 battery pack before you sell the thing nobody in their right mind will want to buy it from you. |

The car is only as green as the electricity used to charge it. Having an electric car that consumes power from fossil fuels being burned is no better than a normal car. |

I think for some people/families, it may be a viable option.
Some people seem to hate them, but I'm confused as to why anyone would want to limit choices in this regard? |

An interesting number of Luddites on this thread.
Air conditioning was available in the 1920s but it didn't become common in private homes until the 1960s. My point is that new technology starts out expensive and rather inefficient, until it becomes cheap and efficient...and that takes time, investment, and innovation. And some things, like air ships, never work out.
Keep in mind that when trains were new, lots of fuddy-duddies said that traveling at 30 mph would suck the air out of people's lungs and they would die.
I always keep in mind that Oog the Spear-chucker said bows and arrows would never work out. |

Automatic transmissions are expensives enough to replace or rebuild if something goes wrong them without having the extra expense of replacing your cars battery. Chevy is not exatly known for building car that last a really long time. Until the likes of Chevy start offering 200,000 mile warranties on their batteries I think I'll pass. |

Actually quite a few companies are working on the development of airships for passenger, cargo and military purposes. When low speeds are acceptable it will make economic and environmental sense to use airships as opposed to aeroplanes. |

However, that does still not solve the problem of getting the power from somewhere. Oil is an extremely cost-efficient source of energy, so how do you propose to bring down the operating cost of electric cars to conventional ones?

That's not to say that there is no future for electric cars - maybe in the future they will just have to be much smaller and lighter than we have got used to. |

I have ADHD/dyslexia which often effects my ability to properly express my thoughts in writing if you really must know Ya-ta. |

How do I propose? I'm a freakin' English teacher. I don't propose anything in this area. I do propose that it is a fool who thinks that what exists now is the same as what will exist in 10 years...or whatever. |

Woah, easy there, it's just a turn of phrase!
You're right that some things will change, but the laws of nature won't, and a future for electric cars is going to mean becoming way more energy efficient than they are now. |

Whoa, yourself.
I have no idea if some breakthrough will be made or not. I hope one will. The difference between you and me is that I do not mistake what is today as the way things will always be. It may well be in this one limited area, but it most certainly will not be in other areas. |

What? Where have I said that I don't things will change? All I said was that electric cars have massive obstacles to overcome and we'll have to re-think design. |
