A Korean-American wanted for two counts of attempted homicide in the United States was captured in Seoul after running an English-language academy under a false identity.

According to the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency on Monday, the 33-year-old fugitive, identified by his surname Kim, has been wanted by Los Angeles police since 1997.

(Yonhap News)

He is suspected of shooting at two members of a Mexican gang which had been in conflict with a Filipino gang he belonged to in May 1997.

Kim, then 17 years old, fled to Korea in July that year.

In Korea, he acquired the ID of another man surnamed Lee who emigrated to the U.S., with help of relatives. He got a drivers license and passport with the fake ID and taught English at private institutions called hagwon.

In December 2008, he opened an institute for students preparing for the SAT, an entrance examination for U.S. colleges and universities, in Seouls southern district of Gangnam.

Kim also faked a college diploma, posing as a graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles.

According to the Seoul police, Kims hagwon ran classes for only a small group of pupils from affluent families in the area. The enrollment fee was 1 million won a month at the lowest.

Police officials said Kim face charges of forgery of private documents and the violation of a law governing the management of private educational institutions. Police also sought an arrest warrant for the person jointly running the hagwon with him.

If the U.S. authorities request his extradition, they will fully cooperate, the police said.

This sounds pretty familiar. Wasn't there an actual murderer doing the same thing here in korea?

This is a big story on the Korean TV news. BTW, how did they catch him? Does anyone know?

Quote:
Kim fled to Korea that July and began living under someone elses name starting in 1998. With the help of a relative in Korea, Kim was able to forge a passport and a drivers license using a resident registration number belonging to an acquaintance, surnamed Lee, who had moved to the United States when he was young and no longer needed the number.

Using his new identity, Kim traveled abroad 34 times until his arrest, police said.

He passed through Korean Immigration at least 34 times!

Quote:
In 2002, Kim began working as an English teacher in the Gangnam area until he set up his own hagwon in 2008 in ritzy Apgujeong with a partner, identified as Kang, 36. Kang and Kim had grown close from working as English teachers together in other institutions.

Kim and Kangs hagwon was advertised as specializing in the SAT Reasoning Test, even though neither attended college.

Kim was found to have only a high school degree, police said, and forged his academic record to say that he had graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles, or UCLA.

Police also filed an arrest warrant for Kang for forging his academic record. Kang claimed to have graduated from San Diego State University.

The two also face charges for illegally hiring unregistered teachers who do not have proper certification.

Police said Kim may be extradited to the United States.

Since 2002?

It does make you wonder about many of those other " high class" hagwons. At least it should.

Another article said that the police received a tip and tested his fingerprints that they got from the US.

Of course, why not? Although, I think the F-4 might not be handed out like candy in the near future.

I'm not sure there will be any changes. Here's a similar story from a year or so back.

I think korea will be forced to loosen restrictions on immigration in the coming decade..simply out of demographic need.
