Is my boss trying to screw me over?!

I started teaching a month ago and my boss and I have just started figuring out pension/health plan. She tells me we DO NOT have to have either and I know one foreign teacher has opted out of both.

However, I want to get my pension but I want to make sure I'm only paying half and our employer pays the other half. We don't want to do the health insurance but our boss says we HAVE to have health insurance if we get a pension. Is this true? I'm afraid my boss is just going to charge me double for pension so they don't have to pay into it.

Also, my salary is 2.1 million and my boss said pension etc will cost just over 200,000K a month. I asked for a more specific break down but wasn't given one.

Any help would be wonderful!!

I think the pension and health insurance are a package deal.

Also, the pension is 4.5% of your salary, with your employer contributing a matching 4.5%. So 9% of 2.1 million won is 189,000W.

The cost to you should be only half of that.

your boss is correct.

if you do national public health insurance you have to do pension. unless its private and in that case most likely sucks and isn't worth the money.

200k sounds about right (you pay 100k its 50-50)

oh ok i was under the impression they are not a package deal. Thanks for clarification...but it sounds like my boss said i'll pay all 200,000 won....i'll bring this up next time we talk. THANK YOU

hate to break the news, if you are on an E2, pension and NHIC ARE MANDATORY!!! dont let your boss fool you that you have a choice, he's trying to save on his share of pension and health and if something happens to you health wise (get thrown into traffic by an ajumma pushing to get on a bus) you will be SOL

haha alright, i'll ask for both. Is there a government website I can refer to when I tell my boss that I will only pay half my pension and in sure the company matches it?

yeah as far as i know they're both compulsory, but can't you claim back the pension payments at the end of your contract too?

Probably, but someone other than myself should answer that. Call and ask them whether or not you've been enrolled. Another option is to whip out your phone and actually call the pension office in front of your boss. I'd bet on him/her conceding instantly. I did something similar and found the pension form on my desk the next day.

Yes. Regardless of whether you're being booked as a PC or an employee, from what I understand. But you'll also be paying the backlogged 4.5% yourself. So keep that in mind.

I'm in the same situation, getting f'd over, and I'm not happy about it. I'm pushing pretty hard in my case and it appears to be working at the moment (pay raise, other benefits, etc.), but I'm not getting legalized, so it's also not working. I think you should keep a backup plan in your pocket. Press mildly at first, without being afraid to be more authoritative if they keep throwing tricks at you. They also have a lot to lose if you ever decide to notify the proper authorities and smear their school name/location all over the internet. Think about lining up new documents unless you're willing to live without reliable/non-existent health care. You can report them at anytime, use that to your advantage, instead of rolling over. If I'm wrong about anything someone will correct me.

If worst comes to worst, I've been told that it's better to get fired instead of quitting (or maybe even signing a LOR, but I'd still like to hear more information on that, especially regarding the new documentation regulations. As it takes a while to get some of them).

You do not need to educate your employer. Simply remind them they will have to, and that you are contacting the appropriate parties who will collect if they don't pay into it.

This is not up for negotiation or discussion. Then, enjoy the rest of your day.

I didn't research this fully, but I saw "2.66%" mentioned for medical. This would come to 61,180 for a 2.3 salary. Looks like he took out 3%. I am more inclined at this stage to think I am looking at old data than he is screwing you with medical deductions.

This leaves pension contributions. The more he deducts, the more he has to match. It's a 50/50 arrangement. So, don't talk to him now about it. Go to the pension office instead and ask to get a balance of what is in the account. Does it show 207,000 for one month?

I see 7% or less floating around online, so that would be 161,000, (80,500 each). 103,500 is 9%. Does your contract state 9%?

What about income tax? that's 4-7%

You can do the math. If they won't give it to you, that doesn't mean the figures aren't there. I just figured out the pension thing. You are cool with that. Income tax and medical you should ask about.

Health insurance would keep a peace of mind, but probably going to the doctor would likely be cheap.
