Ok just for interest, give a Korean bank a mark out of ten and say why..

Kookmin bank (KB)
English service: Zero, you must bring a Korean for every appointment.
Credit card: Yes, they grant foreigners a credit card that works internationally. ..but not if you work at a hakwon. And even then it must be secured by a large deposit ..and requires lots of paperwork.
Downside is they demand you close your account and hand in your credit card on the day your contract ends. Even if you assure them that you'll be back in Korea after your holiday, and that they already have no risk because you paid a hefty security deposit. Leaving you feeling pretty irritated.

I'm with Hana bank and they're pretty good so far. Annoying to have charges imposed to access my money from ATMs but it seems to be standard here. I can use my bank card for internet shopping on a limited basis, basically within korea i think. The last thing you mentioned about having to hand in my card when my contract's up doesn't apply to me I think.

For those who don't know how to send money home, I recommend a visit to KEB bank. I have an account with them that i just transfer money into from my other korean account, then it's back in my uk bank account within a day. Very convenient if you're paying off debts back home.

How would they know? I left Korea for over a year and my Kookmin account was untouched. But then again, I never got a credit card.

Kookmin bank (KB)
English service: Minimal, always have worked in small cities and my Korean is passable, and the tellers always try to spit out a few english words.
Transferring money overseas: Okay, but every time I switch towns they have to call my previous branch and confirm everything again. Annoying for the first time I transfer money in a new town, but I think it has to do with some asinine Korean law than the bank.
Credit card: Don't have one. Although I wouldn't mind getting one, but is pretty low in my priority list. I have Canadian credit cards if I really need to use a credit card.
Check card: I started out with a bank card, but one day it stopped working. So I walking into a branch and they gave me a check card, can't believe the convenience of the thing. Never tried it outside of Korea though. I like carrying cash and always use my Canadian cards when travelling overseas.
Number of branches: Probably the second most present bank behind Nonghyup in Korea. There will be at least one KB branch in every single city or county in Korea.

KEB: 9/10

Check card works overseas, everytime.

Transferring money online is a breeze.

Some branches (Dongdaemun is where I went) have limited Sunday hours for remittance purposes...great if you haven't setup the online wire transfer yet and you work at public school.

Extremely easy to call them up and find someone who speaks English.

Never tried to get a credit card.

I can't think of any downside compared to other banks. Maybe they have a few less branches than KB or Woori, but I have never had trouble finding a branch/atm.

KEB,
as far as I'm concerned, they're perfect. Never had any problems, full English service, any time there has been a minor issue with my card (something has been causing my bank cards to wear out quickly), it's been taken care of quite quickly.
When I go to the branch there are a couple girls there who speak English, and I've never had to wait more than a few minutes to see one of them.
Fully English website, English iPhone app, very easy to send money overseas, etc.

Check card: 3 Didn't work outside the country.
Service: 8 if you speak Korean. 0.5 if you do not.
Operating Hours: 2 Not sure how anyone employed is supposed to go there between 9AM and 4PM.
ATMs: 10 They have a ton of them in Seoul.

KEB - excellent service, one member of staff speaks English very well at my local branch, easiest remittance, and user friendly website. All in all, the best out of three banks I've been with (previous were NH and Woori). I would give them 9/10.

Is it a BC card? If so i have the same. I went to a lot of trouble applying for their credit card, they assured me it had the visa symbol which I took to mean that it must be international.

But of course they later tell me that it does not work outside of korea. Rolling Eyes "No foreign adress.

Another thing: their cards need to be activated over the phone in Korean. A bit confusing for foreigners.

Shinhan:

10/10

English service is excellent at all of the branches I have been to

Online banking is a breeze and works w/o IE

Transfers are cheap and they give you good deals when buying a large amount of currency

Credit card is pretty much the same as everywhere, but they get good discount rates.

Check card works overseas (only tried it in Japan and US)

dumbest post i've seen today.

english zero? at every branch i've been to theres been someone either fluent or at least decent enough english to take care of my business. to say there is zero english support there is asinine.

your downside is 100% not true. YOU CAN GET A KB ACCOUNT ON A TOURIST VISA IVE SEEN IT DONE TWICE. even if they did ask you to close it, you could just transfer the owners name from the arc to your passport. so when i was vacationing elsewhere my money was safely waiting for me when i got back.

i've never had to pay ANY "secruity deposit" with any bank in korea OR my home country. i have no idea where you're getting this dumb idea. it's free to open a bank account.

your post fails so hard i wonder how much more difficulty you have with life in general than i do. lmfao @ closing an account then opening a new one.

KEB 9/10

Great for everything except for joint accounts. KB gets one point for that. (Any I didn't close my account when I left. Didn't have a contract, anyway.)

Every time I've been to Shinhan to ask about an account they've flat-out refused to issue an ATM card and internet banking on account set-up even though their head office says that's crap.
Your mileage may vary heavily with them.

To get a credit card as a hagwon teacher requires a security deposit at nearly all banks if they even let you apply(likely not).

English support is spotty....it's not required like KEB to have some English speakers around.

Shinhan 9/10

English service is amazing. Every branch has a few that speak really well. Plus, the English phone line is great too. Any time I have a problem with online banking, they work everything out. Down side, only works with i/e.

I have a visa debt card. I'e used it in 4 or 5 different countries now. Never had an issue. Just have to find an ATM with the + symbol. Also works fine at any store that takes visa. It took some pushing to get it, so don't give up so easily.

Only bad thing is the exchange rate and fee when sending money back home. Terrible rate. If it's less than $1k, just use paypal. I avoid their overseas transfers whenever possible.

Also, great rates on their CDs. I'm pulling over 3% on 1 month maturities.

Other than that, great bank. I've been super happy.

Dumbest post I've seen this week.

Clearly, since you know how all banks treat all people at all times the OP must be lying or stupid. Rolling Eyes

He must have an easier time with life in general, as you seem unable to grasp the basic concept that the experiences of others do not mirror yours.
