So, I'm just wondering if anyone out there owns an iPad and what you think of it as a reading device. I've got tons of books. Too many, and they are expensive. I was thinking of getting an iPad mainly for book reading, but also would use it for comic books, photo albums, etc. I am not interested in either the Kindle or Nook. I love the look of the iPad, constantly hear great reviews about it, and think the screen is just excellent.

My question is: Do you feel more eye strain from reading from the iPad than you would a book? I generally read indoors, rarely ever outside, so the glare from the screen wouldn't bother me. I'm just wondering because I sometimes get eye strain when using my iMac for extended periods.

This is the big key factor in my purchase of an iPad. So far, I've been 100% happy with my Apple purchases, and the iPad is seriously on the horizon now...

I do a lot of reading on my ipad and I haven't noticed any eye strain. It's been great for books and comic books.

Yeah, so far I've been hearing that. You're getting me more interested in getting one soon. Especially as an expat, it would be nice to have all your books in one device, rather than ship boxes home.

I wonder how useful it would be to wait for the iPad 3. Or just get the iPad 2.

Anyone else care to comment on the eye-strain factor?

ez to change brightness in less then 2 seconds - so dont worry about eye strain. also every magazine (ex stuff, maxim, nat geo) are all ripped to PDF, from every corner of the world, so you will NEVER run out of reading material!

The new Nook Color is an LCD screen, I believe. I guess they don't seem to think it's so bad.

this might sound odd, but could you use it as a light table? i'm getting back into sketching and i'm thinking if i crank up the brightness i might be able to see an image though some paper with it. and with the glass screen ... hmmm...

I love my iPad. In terms of reading, I prefer iPad to Kindle or Nook because you can download .epub files (book files) drag them right into iTunes and read books that you download from like a mediafire or megaupload.

As a light table, that's a bit weird, not going to lie, but if you get a "flashlight" app, it turns the screen completely white and you can turn up the brightness. It should work but not as well as a traditional light table.

I think you're thinking a light table for photography purposes. I was thinking of using it when sketching/drawing. In other words, laying a piece of paper over the screen to trace some parts of the image onto the overlying piece of paper. I tried it on my iPod and the touchscreen was still reactive through the paper so perhaps this is a bad idea unless I could somehow disable the sensitivity of the touchscreen while drawing?

OP, I enjoy reading on the iPad - no issues from me on that.

Chaz, it's possible, but the screen is not that big. Also remember that it has a rounded back that'd need balancing.

No no no. I know what you're talking about, but it didn't occur to me that you wouldn't have to do it the old fashioned way! haha. It should work. I'd get iPad2 because the iPad1 has the curved back like the Captain said. It should work great and it's a solid design so you shouldn't have any trouble drawing on it.

So, can you adjust/turn off the screen responsiveness?

So, I hear the iPad 2 HD is coming out soon. I quite like my iphone 4 (resolution-wise) and was a bit disappointed with iPad 2's resolution (emphasis on 'a bit', I mean, it's still pretty good).

But... this leads me to thinking I will wait it out!

I'll get the iPad 2 HD and price is not an issue. I'll pay whatever it costs. Should be around $500-700. That's cool.

Rumor is that it will come out in September. But rumors are just rumors... for now...
