I found the next line funnier: "The book describes Korea as being among one of the few countries in the world where people will bring you your wallet if you accidentally drop it on the street. "
I've known several people who have dropped or forgotten their wallet/purse/cell phone, and very few of those stories end with their safe return. My wife dropped her wallet in the neighborhood once. It ended up at a police station with all the money missing. My coworker dropped a wallet and some middle or high school kids were caught trying to use the credit card later the same day. My students have often told me that they've had money and other things stolen from them right in the school library. [/quote] |

| I think I agree with the general sentiment though. There have been several times that I've forgotten small stupid things in my gym. In the US, it would've been forget about it for sure. In Korea, I miraculously recovered my things the very next day. |

Opposite for me.
Every wallet returned, never robbed; in America.
In Korea: robbed plenty, never had any wallets or phones returned.
I talked to Koreans and and know some kyopo store owners here: petty crime is really high. Lots of elderly have no income and plenty of high school kids have limited outlets for self-expression or rebellious behavior.....so they steal.....alot.
Those bars on windows ain't for show. |

| As for me, in four years in Korea: one wallet lost, one wallet returned sans cash (ended up at a police station), one phone lost, one phone returned, but the most annoying, despite being worth the least...a pair of glasses stolen from my desk at my public elementary school |

| You may not see a strong police force on the streets of Korea but there are many private security guards and CCTV for a reason. Be smart. |
