The U.S. Embassy in Seoul is transmitting the following information as a public service to all U.S. citizens in the Republic of Korea.

Seoul Metropolitan Police authorities advised the Embassy that on Thursday, August 18, at approximately 2:00 p.m. an air-raid siren will sound for one minute to signal the start of a nationwide civil defense drill. Pedestrians in open and public areas should seek shelter in nearby buildings or subway stations. All drivers/vehicles on the road must pull over and come to a complete stop. At approximately 2:15 p.m. a second siren will sound, signaling the conclusion of the drill. Local authorities will give further instructions if necessary.

Why was I hearing jet noises and something that could have been far-off explosions at the same time? Sounds like they were playing a recording of the war.

Yeah, Koreans are idiots. "Let's practice for a Nork invasion by standing completely still so we make easier targets!... Fighting!"

I suppose someone of your military expertise would be able to come up with a completely fool proof anti invasion plan, I mean with all the All of Duty experience you must have.

Yeah stupid Koreans why arnt they listening to the enlightened English teachers. I mean if your teaching English in Korea it must mean your smarter than all these yellow people.

A moving target is harder to hit than a stationary target. No two ways about it, but I'm sure you'll try to find an asinine way to prove that's not true. So I'll rephrase my original post so I don't offend your overly-sensitive PC self.

The Korean government is run by idiots and Koreans are the sheep who follow the ridiculous directives.

And, I'm so not an English teacher. What a depressing, low-paying job that is.

Please cite where anyone has been directed by anybody to "stand completely still". Or is this just bile you have chosen to regurgitate here in the hopes of appearing intelligent?

Go back to my first point. What the *beep* would you know about the drills or their purpose. But you obviously seem to think you know more than everybody else on these matters

Dont fool yourself, I wasn't offended there is a difference between "not PC" and "arrogant tool"

Yeah whatever. I'd put money that you either are or were an English teacher in Korea

To TJ:

Cars are all required to stop when the sirens sound. That's where it is cited that people should remain completely still. While stopped in the car, you are not permitted to exit the car. I know this because I was forced to stop while running errands in the car today.

Stopping in the middle of the street, remaining inside the car, and not moving for 15 minutes would qualify as a stationary target, yes? If they really want to run a real drill, then shouldn't people abandon their cars and move to designated safe areas? What's the point of sitting inside a car for 15 minutes in the middle of the street? Does that somehow help you in a disaster or attack by the North? Staying in a car didn't look like a very bright idea a few weeks ago when the floods hit and cars were submerged. So, I go back to my point that the drill is designed by idiots, and those idiots happen to be Koreans working for the Korean government.

To Airborne:

I can very happily say that I have never in my life taught English in Korea (or anywhere else). I came here in the mid 1990s with a Ph.D and worked at a university for 3 years teaching a core subject (read: Not English). Then, in 1999 I opened my first business here and currently run two businesses, which keeps me very busy and very well paid.

So, you lost your money (Quote: "I'd put my money that you either are or were an English teacher in Korea."). How much were you betting on this? Should I send you my bank account information so you can send the money to me? I'll even send you one of my business accounts so you can verify I'm not an English teacher. What do you think? Does 100,000 won seem like a fair amount for losing the bet?

By the way Airborne... with your piss-poor punctuation ("Dont fool yourself, I wasn't offended there is a difference between "not PC" and "arrogant tool.""), I hope you're not an English teacher here, because you'd be doing your students a great disservice.

Finally, I'm not arrogant. Arrogant is when you think you are better. I know I'm better. Example: I don't even teach English, yet my English grammar is superior to your English grammar. Furthermore, I realize that sitting in a car, parked in the middle of the street during a time of disaster or war, might not be the best idea, so why make people practice doing it? ever do something that doesn't make sense.

I'll wait for your defense of the mighty and wonderful, can-do-no-wrong, ROK.

Dude you really don't get the point of the drills.

And please stop putting two space after your periods. It's unseemly if you're not using a typewriter.

Because everyone driving around, panicking and hitting into each other is much better than staying still for a while.

My point isn't that the ROK Government and army can do no wrong or that we should absolutely do everything that they say. My point is that you don't know what your talking about.

please send me the website of your business, if you wouldn't mind.

Zyzyfer: Please refer to "A Manual For Writers," by Turabian (Chicago Press). It is considered to be the fundamental guide for written English grammar and punctuation. According to Turabian, it is proper to use two spaces after periods, question marks, exclamation marks, and colons. On the other hand, one space should be used after commas and semicolons.

I guess you can go back to teaching kindergarten students now.

Airborne: I am in a brick-and-mortar business each day, so please feel free to stop by during normal business hours (and please bring the money I won in our bet). The address is: Hwa-Rim Building, 78 Sonamu Gil, Jongro-Gu, Seoul. We are on the 6th floor, suite 604. Please PM me to tell me when you plan to visit so I am sure to be there. There is parking in the basement if you drive, and I can validate your parking ticket. See you soon.
