@runthegauntlet Have you been to the US, do you know what is happening there? They, are the paranoid, and they don't care about rights or a constitution, so yes, I assume they would search my files.

Looks like I'll just pack up the hard drive and mail it back with a box of clothes and other items. I figure that is the way to avoid the search.

Are you tired of the way things are now? Well, here is the answer to the problem.

Well, since nobody else seems to remember it, a poster on here was stopped on his way into Canada, I believe, and found to have DVD's full of kiddie porn. He ended up committing suicide a short time later. Maybe someone else can find the article, or remember the exact truth to it all.

pretty sure that isnt what is in question here.

YES, they can and will search your HDDs and laptops if they so desire

I have had my HDDs searched on multiple occasions, usually because I travel with 3-4 extra drives which I suppose makes me suspect.

Do they care if you have downloaded stuff? No. Full Stop. Period. There is no question about this.

I think it goes without saying that if that material is kiddie porn, they do care. And IMO, well that they should. It is one of the most disgusting things a person can possibly engage in.

Yes, and I'm not denying that. But my point was that he was indeed searched to the point that they looked at the files to see what was there.

Get a grip on what? The person asked if they can or will check it. The answer is yes. You said no. Your answer was wrong.

Is it likely? No. But that wasn't the question was it?

Get a grip on your fear-mongering.

He asked, and I quote:
Quote:

Do customs officials go through computers and external hard drives and such things when you return from abroad? Just curious to see if my downloaded movies and music will put me in the slammer.

The answer to his specific query is 'no', which is the answer I gave though my exact words were 'of course not'.

Ergo, I am right and YOU are wrong.

And if you feel compelled to argue about it, just ask the OP if his computer was searched and he wound up in 'the slammer'.

You're welcome.

LOL...some people go to any lengths to prove a wrong answer right. You can guarantee that the OP's laptop will not be searched? No you can't. Its amazing how some people will be intellectually dishonest. You're not fooling the forum. You said he will not be searched. The FACT is he could be searched. If he isn't searched then you're trying to nuance a wrong answer and leave the OP with the WRONG impression that they will never have their laptop searched.. I said its possible he will be searched. YOU gave the OP the impression there is no chance he will be searched by your answer. ANYONE can now see that your assertion that there is no possibility his laptop will not be searched is completely and utterly false. His not being searched does NOT prove that faleshood.

Too funny.

As for fearmongering, I am stating facts. Anything you have on your person and including your physical self with xrays can be searched. What is fear mongering about that? Its a stated fact. How you perceive it is up to the individual.

Last post on this as its obvious you're squrming out of a wrong answer. I've been wrong before on here, all of us have, be an adult and accept it instead of trying to nuance your way around it. I was not impolite when I posted about your being wrong. I simply said 'Not true' and backed it up with links and evidence. Man Up runthegauntlet. You're making yourself look silly now.

You're complaining about a policy that is largely in place to fight kiddy porn. Nice.

I guess anything is possible, but I travel to the US at least once a year, always carry my laptop, and no one has ever searched it. I did forget to empty my pockets once and they asked me to do that.

The OP asked if he could get thrown in jail for his files if he was searched. The answer is a definite no.

I told you what you needed to do if you wanted to argue.

You haven't done it and you don't have a point to make. What I said is correct. The OP has no reason to wipe his hard-drive as he won't be locked in the slammer.

I pointedly stated that he could be searched (and illustrated the unlikelihood of it) so I'm not sure why you're going down that route when it's already been addressed. Throwing up an 'intellectually dishonest' assertion neither refutes any of the above nor makes what I've said wrong in any way.

As this was your last post I take it that you've essentially conceded that. If you haven't, once again, just ask the OP. Thanks for playing so politely and all, too bad you couldn't run away without attempting one last denigrating comment...

But that's not what's happening, is it? Given the context of what they're trying to combat and what they're doing to combat it, I think the policy is entirely reasonable.

Absolutely right. I mistakenly took the question will someone get searched as the OP's. So, wrong in that regard. They won't take a computer for pirated movies and songs.

However, on the question of can a person get searched. The answer is yes, they can. Likely, no? However, if you fit a certain profile, it will be likely they will search you.

But the government is going overboard in its hunt for kiddy pornographers. Kiddy porn is used as the excuse used by the government to track our internet habits and to limit our online freedom.
