Hey there...
Ok so I have posted some topics up of late asking for advice on hagwon issues...
Having had money withheld from our wages, persistent cockroaches in our apartment and other undesirable circumstances, myself and my friend have decided we want to leave.
We have considered telling them we are leaving as soon as we are paid, but are worried they will try to take money off us for this. They have already kept half our first months wages. We have also considered doing a midnight run, yet I am a bit wary about doing this, not to mention feeling a bit guilty about it.
Is it true you can be detained at immigration for doing this?
Or should we just give them a weeks notice or so and hope for the best??
any help will be appreciated. |

You won't get in trouble if you do a midnight run. The immigration people at the airport don't know you're running. They assume you're traveling.
Giving your boss advance notice will give him time to take more money from you.
Also, I think you can't come back to Korea until your current visa expires. So if you're planning on returning to Korea, running probably isn't a good idea.
How about this: The next time you get paid (after you have the money in your bank account), tell your boss you are considering quitting, because your apartment is disastrous/whatever other complaints you have. Say that if those issues were addressed, you would love to stay. Then based on his reaction, you have a few days to decide if you'll stay or go. Maybe you could even get a letter of release? |

Immigration DOES NOT care why you leave, or when, as long as you don't overstay. Trust me, they've seen it many times before.
I'm pretty sure you don't want to say anything if they have already been screwing with you.
You could try to find a new, better job here [much easier on the ground than from abroad] and then do the whole visa run thing to Japan. Getting docs from Ireland has to be faster than from the US. It depends on whether you hate teaching/Korea, or just this particular job.
Try not to do anything rash. You'll have better prospects if you take your time and think it through, don't just book the first flight you can find. |

Actually, if you give immigration your ARC card when you run, your visa will be cancelled and you'll be good to go to come back and find another job. |

Ah, that's right. Handing in your ARC at immigration at the airport cancels your visa. Then you could leave Korea for a day or a month or whatever, come back on a tourist visa, find a new school, and go on a visa run in Japan. |

Any hint you are leaving makes you a flight risk. Also, it makes less of a chance you could get a letter of release. If you don't want to come back, then you never need to say you will quit. If you want to come back, then it's better to negotiate a letter of release than fly somewhere only to fly back. Are you owed that much more than a flight? If it's 2 of you, double it. That's a lot of money to be spending, just to go out the exit door. |

Just leave the day you get paid. It's not worth staying in a bad situation. |

They are shysters, give them no consideration whatsoever. Just run after you're next paycheck.

No, only if you break the law; not if you break a contract. |

Do not feel guilty. Korea is not the United States. People will shaft you in may cases if they can; your employer has broken the law. He/she should feel guilty. You need to protect yourself. We live in a cut-throat world to some extent, and the European Union minus Bulgaria and Romania, the US, and Canada are exceptions when it comes to expecting fairness from employers and finding it the overwhelming norm that employers follow contracts. If your boss is willing to exploit you, that means he/she is not honest, so just "Go and take your money and run". Your boss is a thief as far as I am concerned, so telling someone who is not out there to help you would be foolish. Get as much money as you can and go.
Hand in your ARC and say you're done. |

Don't tell them a word. Smile and take your check and get the hell out as soon as you can. Why would you feel guilty about someone who is screwing you, has probably screwed others in the past, and will certainly screw others in the future? If its about the kids, they probably really don't care that much as they have seen many teachers come and go.
You are not one of the lucky 20% or so that actually manage to find decent jobs. Korea is a hole, get out while you still can. |

oooor you could do it the legal way...give them a "whatever number it says in your contract" weeks notice that you're quitting and they'll be obliged to pay you everything. meanwhile look for a new job |
