I have worked at a public school for three years now but would like to start looking for a university job. My public school contract ends at the end of this year (Dec 31).
Now, when I interview for a university position (probably in November or December), I won't have a criminal background check in hand. Does this cause a problem?
Ideally, I would find a job and then go home and get my paper work done.
Is this possible? I'm really hoping that it is. I like my public school, but it's time to move on.
Oh, I should note that I'll have an MA in TESOL by May of 2012.
Thank you so much in advance... I really need some answers... |

Your university job won't be starting until February/March 2012, right? You'll definitely need a new RCMP check with fingerprints for that visa but you'll have more than enough time to get it before your new job starts, especially if you apply for the CRC from Korea.
Keep in mind that if you're going to be on an E1 visa, you won't need a CRC to get a visa, but some schools might ask for it anyway.
Are you asking if you'll need it for the actual interview? The answer is no. Explain to them when they ask that you'll be going home to get your paperwork and that should be enough. The only potential problem is that they might prefer to hire someone with their paperwork in hand, but there's no way to know that beforehand. Just apply to as many universities as you can and you'll find something.
It's months away, don't worry! |

Thanks for the reply!
My worst case scenario is not being able to find a university job and ending up working at a hagwon...
I do feel a bit better now.
Has anyone applied for a CBC from within Canada recently? How long did it take?
Good night! |

I recently got an RCMP check last February. I had my fingerprints done digitally and got the results back the next week. |

Hey
The criminal record check that I applied for (and was accepted in a public school in Korea) took me like 5 minutes to get...This was last year
They have a new type of a criminal check for employment overseas and I think that's the one that everyone is getting nowadays. It's really just a piece of paper that costs like 20-30$ for 5 minutes of their time.
Also, I'm assuming most universities start their new year in September, so you might have more choice then. I can't imagine too many unis will be hiring in Nov/Dec time. although you never know...
Finally, the CRC itself is only needed for when you apply for a new visa. That's usually when you already start working, so like someone else mentioned, you don't need it until then. Just explain your situation. |

Your assumptions are largely incorrect.
If he is changing his visa status he may need a new CBC.
If the one on file is not K-consulate certified AND the new job starts in the new year (2012) he WILL need a new one. If he can transfer before the end of Dec. he may not need a new one (situation specific and lots of IFs).
The academic year in most of Asia starts in the spring and ends in late winter. Only a few international schools (unless you are looking at China) are on the "western" academic calendar.
In Korea, the majority of Universities do their recruitment in Nov-Dec for jobs beginning the following March/April (start of term).
