PostPosted: Thu Aug 18, 2011 5:03 pm    Post subject: social life on jeju island? Reply with quote

Hello, I am hoping someone can fill me in on Jeju nightclubs, dining, etc.. I will be in Korea for my first year teaching next month and I am still undecided on Seoul or Jeju. I know Seoul will have absolutely everything you could want and would be the easiest choice of location, but I just spent a year living in Sydney and am thinking I could use a year outside of a cosmopolitan city.

So for any current Jeju inhabitants I would love to know about the nightlife (clubs, pubs, whatever), and just the general social scene. I would love a smaller city with a slower pace of life, but I am partial to the occasional beverage(s) a few times a week.

Also how is the dining there? I am just looking for lots of different options, doesn't have to be all western food, but a mix of different flavors would be certainly welcome.

If there's any guys out there I suppose I should ask about the women and ratios . Is there a lot of female teachers? I definitely do not want to be stuck on an island sausagefest.

Any help or info would be wonderful so I can make my most educated choice!

I think there is a high proportion of foreigners here on Jeju considering the size of the cities. And the foreigner chicks here are way hot. I met so many really gorgeous slender/athletic dames here. I think Jeju attracts more artists and outdoorsy people than other areas. If you have an opportunity to work on Jeju, you should.

You would probably prefer to be in the city (Jeju City or Shin Jeju) rather than other areas, IMO.

Along with Rhymes, you might also look over the Jeju Weekly.

Some of the mods on Rhymes are jerks, though. They deleted my thread and kicked me when I made a post about shooting food porn and used several silly sexually suggestive puns. *grumble grumble*

Thanks for the replies!

I will definitely check out those sites and read up. I was semi-scared to post anything on this site due to the overwhelming negativity of many responses to innocent questions.

As for Jeju, the job I am thinking about is in Samyang, which the director said is about 10-15 minutes outside of Jeju. I have no idea if this is an ok location? I can live with that as long as it's easy for me to get to a gym and to bars and restaurants. That is really the biggest concern for me vs. Seoul.

I actually lived in Samyang about 2 years ago. To be honest there really isn't much happening there. A handful of restaurants and Korean-style hof joints, you probably won't spend much time hanging out in Samyang. Not many foreigners around either, I only knew 2 other people (married couple). There is, however, a really nice beach. I was lucky enough to get an apartment with an ocean view, just minutes away from the beach. It was a nice place, but if I had the option I still would have probably traded it for a place in the city just to be a bit closer to the action. Your director is right, it's about a 15 minute drive outside of Jeju city. So you're really not that far away at all. And Jeju city, while not a huge city by any means, has all of the things you are looking for (gyms, restaurants, bars, foreigner community). The problem is that if you rely on buses it will take you a lot longer than 15 minutes to actually get there. The buses only come maybe once every 20-30 minutes or so and they don't really stick to a tight schedule. You'll end up doing a lot of waiting around. Overall I would say that public transportation on Jeju just plain isn't as good as it is on the mainland. You'll see many foreigners on the island opt to buy scooters or used cars to make getting around easier. Taxis from Samyang are also a quick option but can start to add up if you're heading into the city several times a week. Count on about 10,000 won for a trip to downtown Jeju (city hall area) or 15,000 won to Shin-Jeju.

I can't imagine being stuck on some godforsaken island in Korea (of all places) would be all that enthralling.

YES! Just buy yourself a cheap car or a scooter. It really helps for getting around the city and the island.

I consider Samyang part of Jeju City. I live in the small city of Seogwipo on the south coast and when i visit Samyang beach, I often go into Jeju city, since it's so bloody close. One takes two, three, four times as long to go somewhere in Seoul than it takes to go from Samyang by your own transportation. The traffic isn't very heavy, no big city jams, so get yourself some wheels and enjoy beach AND city life.

Actually I would love to live near a beach and away from the polluted, high traffic squalor of Korean cities. But:

-I wouldn't like to land at Incheon airport after a trip and then have to start a second long journey to Jejo-Do
-I would really miss the great microbrews in Seoul
-I would miss the book shops
-I have a fairly big and diverse group of friends here, I would miss that
-I would miss Costco
-I would miss Pizza Peel(Itaewon), amazing quattro formaggi pizza
-I would miss the "extra income" opportunities

1. Whatever Jeju Island is, God did NOT forsake it. It's quite nice.
2. "Stuck" with 60,000 won return 50-minute flights to Kimpo airport in Seoul for once a month weekend jaunts. International flights to China, Japan and the Phiippines. Stuck, on an island that has a dozen nice beaches, takes several hours to drive around, with a couple of cities, lots of expats and easy transport off. I don't think anyone I've met here considers themself stuck on Jeju.

50 minutes

Visit once a month then on a shopping trip. Most people have them shipped free these days. Check out Whatthebook? online.

The reason some stay on jeju. One builds friendships where one lives. If you've lived in Seoul for years, hey that's your turf.

Shocked Bulk packaged processed foods. .. ordering from Nice Deli online is better for some of us

BEER, PIZZA and PRIVATE LESSONS are best found in the big city, granted.

You think?

Well, I certainly have seen several girls and have been envious of their figures and other various attributes.
Could just be a comparative analysis. I haven't seen any of the Cali blond type hot girls, but there are a lot of tall, slender women with natural beauty here IMO. (I'm not trying to flatter myself, btw.)

Thanks for the info everybody!

Is anybody familiar with Samyang's English Classrooms (SEC)? Haven't been able to dig up any info on them.

I'd do Seoul first, Jeju later....

you can't work in Korea and NOT live in Seoul at least for a little.

that is kind of where I am stuck at right now lalartu! I know I have to do at least 1 year in Seoul or I think I would regret missing out. On the other hand the jeju job seems pretty good, and I think I could stay in Korea for 2 years ( of course that's now, it may be different once I arrive) so I could do Jeju, then Seoul in THEORY.

I'm basically waiting on getting a good job offer for Seoul, but I need to leave ASAP and sort of hedging my bet with Jeju since I have a job offer there.
