It's pricey, but the variety of pizzas they have at California Pizza Kitchen is cool. Try the Original BBQ Chicken. |

There is no perfect pizza in Korea because even if one is delicious, it's horribly overpriced. I get disgusted when eating pizza in Southeast Asia and seeing just how cheap good pizza is there while so-so pizza in Korea is such a ripoff. |

Pizza is by far my favorite food and I'm passionate about it. I'm not an expert, but there's a few things I want to correct here.
sojusucks wrote: |
1) Very few of us who are actually in Korea have ovens in our apartments. Think about it.
2) Those who post about having ovens are usually trolls living in Canada or the USA. Isn't that true? No one I know in Korea has an oven unless they paid a lot to get one. Think about it.
3) Buying pizza, at 59 Pizza, Costco, EMart, or whever, is much cheaper than "making it" in your imaginary oven.
4) Pizza for special trips can be had at Pizza Peel in Itaewon, or at some other pizza restaurants.
Is everything accurate? Think about it. You know where you live and the apartment where you live. Do you have an oven? We don't either. Think about who must be phony trolls posting on this site. We just wanted you to know who's really in Korea and who's not. Some people who post on here are liars. Think about it. They'll flame me for saying it, but isn't it true? Do you have an oven in your apartment? Never had one in korea and most Koreans don't get one, either. |
1) Almost everyone I know well enough to have visited their homes has some kind of oven. I'm not a lifer, no are any of my friends. A toaster oven is a great, yet inexpensive appliance that I feel everyone should pick up (if they have the room in their apartment). I'd say it's better than a microwave. I don't know what bubble you're in where you think everyone is a liar if they say the have an oven, like there's no other possible explanation.
2) Debunked 2-3 times already. I have seen NEW toaster ovens at LOTTE mart for around 35,000.
3) It is ABSURD how much cheaper making your own pizza is, and I figured you of all people would understand this. Flour is dirt cheap; I could probably make 10-15 doughballs for a few thousand won. Sauce is cheap too; some tomato paste and various spices come in around 3-3.5k for 6 pizzas (4 if I want extra sauce). Cheese is the problem, but Costco has you covered on both good pizza cheeses (cheddar and mozzarella) at reasonable prices in bulk. Be willing to bet the pizza I make at home is both cheaper and higher quality than pizza school or 59 (more on them later).
If anything, I'd be complaining that not many foreigners have a full sized freezer to hold all the cheese.

Yes. The pizza i had was Italian style thin and crispy with cheese and big slices of salami (pepperoni). It wasn't thick or had a ton of toppings...but the quality of the cheese, the salami, and the dough used in the crust must have been superb. It was absolutely mouth watering. |
Well, that's the thing. Toppings, even corn, are all about personal preference. It's the ingredients of the underlying pie, and maybe method of cooking, that make the pizza. Most Korean pizzas have more fundamental problems than having corn as a topping. |
This is an excellent observation regarding pizza. I've always said that if you want to try a new pizza restaurant, the first pizza you should order is a cheese pizza. Already there are 3 core ingredients who's composition and quality are the foundation for the overall result. Have you noticed that all the Domino's specials (in the US at least) are all for 1+ topping pizzas? (55 and 777 come to mind) I honestly believe that Domino's business model involves adding toppings to cover up the flaws in their core ingredients.

I tried a calzone at La Tavola Itaewon and it was very poor, even Pizza Hut or Domino's would have been better to be honest. |
La Tavola is an Italian style pizza (as opposed to New York style etc.) The style of many Italian pizzas (from what I've learned) is that the ingredients are kept simple and the focus is on quality as opposed to complexity. I've had La Tavola. It's not bad for Italian pizza, but nothing special. I don't think it's a straight up apples to apples comparison with Pizza School.
A lot of people mentioned Pizza School and 59 Pizza. Costco got a shout out too. In my opinion, pizza can be put into different categories, and while people might have differing opinions about which one is better, I feel the overall categories fit well (higher on the list means I like it better):
Indie Pizza restaurant:
Pizza Peel
Pizzarium
Mid range chain:
Domino's
Pizza Hut
Mr. Pizza
Low range pizza:
59 Pizza
Pizza School
Costco
I like all the pizza's on that list. Any other pizza restaurant I either haven't tried w\or wasn't memorable enough to bother with. The mid range chains, in my opinion, are almost never worth it when you have a cheaper alternative, as they are only slightly better, but much more expensive.
And last, there are 2 gems that sum up everything I didn't say:

Yeah, lack of an oven is easily remedied. Of the ten foreigners I work with, I believe six of us have some form of oven, ranging from toaster ovens to a one rack deal large enough to fit a full size baking sheet in. Lotte and EMart have easily accessible toaster ovens for less than 50,000, GMarket has fairly large one rack ovens for around 100,000. Unless you plan on leaving within a couple months, there's really no reason to bitch about a lack of an oven. You can always resell it when you leave. |

Anyone who thinks its weird to have corn or carrots on a pizza with ketchup needs to consider how utterly bizarre and grotesque an All-Meat (pepperoni, ham, sausage, bacon) pizza with ranch dressing is.
A pizza should ideally have only one meat and varying vegetables.
Pizza for the summer: Onion, Green Pepper, Tomato, Pineapple. Served Cold. Refreshing, delightful. |
no. |
Yes.
An All-Meat pizza is just as much a fail of taste as corn or carrots, possibly more so. |

Believe it or not, the best pizza I had in my life (including many in Rome) is close to my home, in Seoul, but with all ingredients imported from Finland!
This is exactly the pizza we can get in Janghanpyeong:
http://www.kotipizza.fi/
Whole wheat flour, high fiber, great cheese, many options of toppings and calzone with salad. My husband is nutritionist and he is VERY happy to finally find a healthy pizza, we can't get enough of it =)
A large pizza costs almost 30.000 won but you get 20% off for take out and I think it still has 10% off "grand open".
Take line 5 to Janghanpyeong Station, exit 8, it will be just in front of you, above Mercedez Benz store, at 2nd floor of Viva Family Officetel. VERY easy to find. |

The best pizza in Songtan, outside Osan Main Gate, is called Pizza Club. That's great pizza for any location, and especially for Korea. |

I like Papa John's myself. It's not amazing, but it does the job. And that garlic/cheese sauce is pretty awesome. |

I don't have a Papa John's where I live, which sucks big time. I've had to order Domino's and that's not bad but not as good as Papa's. |
