So my director has asked me to stay, but I have just looked at ESL teaching advertisements and my exact job description has been posted. What to do?

Sounds like your boss is trying to hedge his/her bet.

If you stay, he won't need anyone.

If you go, he's already got an ad out there.

You are the best judge as to what your boss is trying to do, certainly not anyone on-line who has never met him.

Start working on a backup plan.

You didn't say you wanted to stay, so he's looking for another. What's the problem?

Did you tell your boss you're renewing or is the boss in limbo?

As other posters have said: have you given your boss a response? If not, the posting only makes sense.

Are you also the only foreign teacher at your school? It may not be for YOUR position -- it may be another person's position, or the school may be adding a teacher.

Best bet is simply to ask your boss about it, if you really want to know....

I am the only teacher at my school. What's funny is that the date of the post is the same as the day that he asked me if I wanted to renew or not. I told him yes that I wanted to stay half a year more. But am now rethinking my decision.

Thanks guys.

there's nothing wrong with posting an add online.

he's just trying to have a backup plan in case you changed your mind at the last second.

it's the Korean mentality

half year = NOT SERIOUS

I would be doing the same as the hagwon owner.

Move on. Your boss views you as disposable and easily replaced. That's the ugly nature of the ESL industry in Korea. If he does find someone who will work for slightly cheaper than you it's "Trevor teacher is going home" time at the hagwon, even if you are staying in Korea. They'll tell the kids, and parents, that you are leaving Korea. That way, none of the kids who like you will follow you to your next school.

Director: Do you want to stay one more year?

SJ: I'm thinking I can stay another six months.

Director: Oh, I guess I better find a new teacher.

Look, I know you feel concerned and possibly even insulted but since you made it through a year with one hagwon owner then you can feel pretty secure about your position Smile

"So my director has asked me to stay" implies that you are not going to. Even your wording here doesn't tell us the whole story, so I would assume that he was confused by your response to him.

You should have said "I agreed to stay here another 6 months, but...."

I would have another talk with him to make firm your commitment to stay. Perhaps there is some reason he wants a teacher for a year, not six months.
