You're complaining about a policy that is largely in place to fight kiddy porn. Nice.
We will break into every house in America and search every hard drive in existence. DON'T COMPLAIN ABOUT MY POLICY TO FIGHT KIDDY PORN!!!! NICEEEEEEEEEE
But that's not what's happening, is it? Given the context of what they're trying to combat and what they're doing to combat it, I think the policy is entirely reasonable.
No, it's not. Let me provide an example.

Let's say that a couple has pornographic material of themselves on their computer. Why the hell should Customs get to view their videos without probable cause? That is a horrendous violation of their privacy! And for what‽ To possibly catch someone with contraband data? That's idiotic!

If they *actually* wanted to do some good, they'd run sting operations in troubled areas. I've seen documentaries of such things happening, so I know that it's very possible. Leave my computer alone; go out into the real world and help children in danger.

They can't / won't make the effort to prove that it was obtained illegally.

As I already stated twice, I have had my HDDs searched TWICE going through customs in the US and neither time have they cared that I had terabyte upon terabyte of pirated crap. They didnt even ask me about the material other than why I had so much of it. I just told that it was hard to get western media in the ROK so I just ripped my collection onto hard drives for easy transportation.

Absolutely right. I mistakenly took the question will someone get searched as the OP's. So, wrong in that regard. They won't take a computer for pirated movies and songs.

There ya go, buddy.

That wasn't so hard, was it?

I've been selected to have all my stuff gone through the three times I've gone back to the US in Autumn of 2009. I think it's because most of my stamps are Egypt in my passport (although now it's barely "most"). That usually takes about 20 minutes. They've never looked through my laptop, though. I'd be really upset if they did, though. One is likely to miss a connecting flight if they take the time to do that.

I agree, I'll probably ship my 2 TB drive back to the US when I go.

Couldn't have said it better myself. America prides itself on its freedoms and civil liberties. Airport security goes against these ideas. You were using a logical fallacy to defend an invasive program.

I'm amazed no one has mentioned what happened to the poster named Grotto a few years back....

What happened to him and where is he? I haven't seen that guy on this board for a while. Is he in customs jail or something?

He killed himself after it was discovered he had child porn.

For real? I remember that guy, and never heard about this...

The guy who commited suicide was frequent poster on this board his name here was Grotto.

After some digging I came up with an article.

http://cjaye57.wordpress.com/2009/09/06/man-charged-with-importing-child-porn-commits-suicide-in-police-lot/

Originally when this got posted I asked for it to be deleted. This kind of news does not reflect well on the board and ESL teachers in Korea. Since the major din of calls against wagook teachers is down a little it is safe.

It looks like that if you come from certain countries you have a higher chance of being searched. If you are really worried - just ship your drive by post or express.

Other things that will get you searched is if you have MANY drives and DVD-Rs. As above which country you are coming from. Which country you are from - a Pakistani doctor had his laptop confiscated to see if he had any links to terrorism.

The reason it was relevant to be posted was because "Grotto" had on occasion spoken of having taken photos of his minor students in Korea and been rightfully called out on it. And then, having vigorously denied being a pedophile, voila! It is proven he was a pedophile. Sick, sad, fat fsck.

There was a guy in our Peace Corps group in Ukraine who went back to America for vacation and they busted him for kiddie porn on the way back into the country. He had hundreds of files of it on his computer.

No clue how they tracked him--I'm guessing he was on a list. But none of us who knew him were at all surprised. In fact, our first guess as to why he was in prison was that he'd had sex with an underage girl. Kiddie porn was the second guess.

I'm a super libertine when it comes to what people do with their lives and their travels, go and get hookers and women and what have you to your heart's content, but draw a huge and intractable line when it comes to kiddie porn and molestation, etc.

these are clearly mentally sick individuals and I have no idea how to treat/cure them. Probably can't be done.

let them rot in jails for a very very very long time. Child rapists should be released into the general prison population where they'll be killed by the common criminals within 5 minutes. very fair to me.

the fact this grotto character was a teacher here and actually photographed his students know gives me the heevie jeevies.

Wow, what a horrible story. I can understand you wanting to keep it quiet because of the hysteria attached to stuff like this and the chance of us all getting a bad rep for it, but the truth needs to be out there sometimes
