Im finishing my public school contract next week. I have some paper that says my work dates. Do i need a letter of release from my school for immigration to start a new job or can i just show the paper they gave me that says im done next week? This paper is basically a proof of the dates i worked there, but i dont think its a letter of release. |

If you plan to do the paperwork for the transfer BEFORE your contract finishes you need the LOR.
IF you are doing the transfer AFTER your contract ends (and before your ARC expires) then you do NOT need the LOR.

Sounds like you don't need a LOR. I had something done that was very similar. I actually had to do it twice because the 2nd school and I came to differences before the second contract period started. Immigration solved this by basically ignoring the fact I did anything with the 2nd school and asked for the same documents. I thought this sheet with the dates you mentioned was the release letter, but it doesn't seem like it now. I had about 2 weeks to get a new school and I got the same sheet with dates and gave it to immigration.
Make sure the ending date is listed, and then take that to immigration with your school.
See if you can go with your second school and not alone. I know you can do this by yourself, but having the new school with you will help out a lot. Immigration will then have a sheet by the first school which shows an end date and they will see someone from the new school. That will rest easier in their mind. |

What if my recruiter wants me to get a letter of release dated at the end of my ARC( October 14th) rather than the date my contract ends(September 14th) so that I can transfer to a new school at the start of November. Does that sound strange? |

They are just putting off doing things and you would be teaching illegally then. The only reason why they would want a release date later than now is so they can do it later. This way, you can work for them at less risk to them.
I have had the same thing in Korea and China. For your sake, IF YOU ALREADY HAVE A SCHOOL YOU WANT TO TRANSFER TO, you should get a release letter dated now rather than later. This puts the pressure on them to get the paperwork done in a timely matter so you are working legally.
Recently, my old visa expired on July 31. My school hired me in April, and they just waited to do anything. Then, all of a sudden in July they were trying to get a release letter from my previous employer. I thought the recruiter did this in April or May. So, the new school was under a lot pressure to get permission to add me without a letter of release. This was in China, I am not in any way suggesting it can happen in Korea and I wouldn't test it. Make sure you get your release letter before you leave the first school and make sure the dates are accurate, not dated for later. |

From my understanding though, I only have a set time after getting a release letter to be able to transfer to another job, without having to go through a damnable visa run. Correct me if I am wrong, but if a job ends on September 14th, and a new one starts on november 1st, I can't do a transfer between them, even if I have a contract in hand from the new School. |

Hence, illegal. What they want you to do is start the contract period for the second year later. Your first hagwon owner would have to be very nice to prepare this.
In my opinion, I would have them prepare now and simply not get paid until November.
What do you plan on doing until then anyways? |

Actually, its another public school that I will be moving to, different province though.
I'm planning to spend about two weeks travelling around different locations in Gyeongnam, Gyeongbuk, Jeollanam and Jeollabuk, then attend my co-teacher's 23rd Birthday party. After that, I'll probably head to Seoul, find a hostel to crash at and spend the rest of my time learning Korean and trying to network as most of my contacts are in Gyeongnam. |

It's going to be hard to plan things not by the book with public schools. You have two choices. You could chance it with your first school which might get pissed and see if they will give a release letter later. They have every right to say no because the contract period is over and they are not re-hiring you.
The other option which is more sound would be to transfer to the new school now and simply get an extension to finish the contract period with the new school. This is more feasible and less risky. You might need to sign something with the new school agreeing not to get paid until the November start date.
Your recruiter, CORRECTION, the school's recruiter is just pushing you. You don't need to give in. You are in the country, you want the job, and you are willing to sign the contract. So, this is good for the school. All they need is an extension, this is a lot more reasonable to expect than your old school playing games.
As a side note, I have always found it best to leave the old school behind as soon as possible. Don't carry on any type of relationship after. |

What if the dates are the same? If you finish your contract Aug 31 and that's when your visa expires, do you need a letter of release to change jobs? |
