Whelp, it only took a (probably expensive) study by the Korean Center for Disease Control to link drinking and smoking to increased depression rates.

The more you drink alcohol and smoke tobacco, the more likely you are to be depressed. That was the finding of an extensive study conducted by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC).
The survey found that 33 percent of female smokers suffered from depression, whereas only 18.7 percent of nonsmokers suffered from the same condition. Eleven percent of male smokers experienced depression, compared to 9.7 percent of nonsmokers.
The KCDC researcher said that people suffering from depression tended to depend on either drinking or smoking to relieve stress instead of getting to the root of their problems. |
The following excerpt is my favorite. Can you guess why?
Quote: |
Smoking might help in relieving depression at an early stage of the disease, said Kim Yun-ah, a KCDC researcher. However, when it becomes a habit and extends over a long period of time, [smoking] makes people psychologically unstable in that they rely on smoking when they feel depressed. |
Psychologically unstable ... interesting. Do you think this language was used purposefully to discourage others from smoking? |

I quit drinking a little while back and yes, it has improved my mood. I've never smoked so I can't comment on smoking but the health hazards will give plenty of worries. |

How about the reverse?
"People suffering from depressions are n% more likely to take up drinking and/or smoking"
You don't need tobacco or alcohol to feel depressed in Korea. |

I thought that was your favorite quote because the KCDC actually says smoking is good for you at some points. |

A study published in the Archives of General Psychiatry followed more than 1,000 people over five years and found that smokers were twice as likely as non-smokers to be depressed.
Meanwhile, smokers have fewer depressive symptoms if they quit but that happier mood goes away if they resume smoking, according to a November 2010 Brown University study. |

Looks like everyone is depressed:
Female non-smoker: 19%
Femael smoker: 33%
Male non-smoker: 10%
Male smoker: 11%
Happy Korea! Hub of depression. |
