Samsung SM5 and Hyundai Mobis: What are they thinking?
I watched the Samsung SM5 and got irritated. A man is sitting and being fawned over by several females thinking "신글?" while his son looks at him disapprovingly. The son puts up a sign in Korean that says "Daddy on board" or something to that effect (can't remember) while they drive through an obviously European street. What the heck?
The worst is the Hyundai Mobis commercial. A woman with a big hat walks down the street while shopping, almost hit by a man on a bike. Then she is driving and is almost side swiped by a car passing her, when she takes a look and smiles, then changes lanes. First seeing it in the movie theatre, I laughed out loud. Now I find it irritating as I see it everyday. The woman clearly needs an alarm to tell her a object is coming when all she has to do is take off her stupid hat and turn her head. Looking stupid and cute is more important than trying to be serious- yours truly could make a better scene where people can understand the purpose for the device:
A mom finishes work or shopping, picks up the kids who are unruly. A bongo truck is barreling down at speeds greater than hers. She looks in the rearview and scolds them when her alarm goes off- whew! Saved by the Hyundai Mobis alarm. Doesn't insult anyone's intelligence and its realistic. Too bad I'm not working as a marketing director at Hyundai.
Tried to find the commercials on youtube to ask my friends about it but to no avail. Can anyone here explain to me the direction commercial marketing is meant to go? |

I certainly am no marketing guru, but my guess would be these types of images are meant to leave the viewer with a type of feeling that having this product would basically make them more "prestigious" , or more simply..make them "better/more high class/more successful..etc..that everyone else.
This is more easily seen in the first commercial you mention..but even in the second commercial with the loopy woman, it still gives the image that the product is so awesome that you will have a one-up on everyone else.
The ones that get me the most (which convince me of the concept above) are the appliance commercials...the ones where this totally handsome man, beautiful woman, or even couple who are portrayed like super-rich movie stars are living in some huge skyrise penthouse apartment overlooking Gangnam, with all white furniture, actual wood colored floors (none of that yellow crap) that move around with the elegance of a swan, sit on their sofa as if posing for a still-life painting, stare off into space as if contemplating the beauty of a rose petal, all the while enjoying the quietness of their kimchi refrigerator. |

Those quick loan commercials always bother me. I like the beer commercials where the guy is picking on the girl. |

Korean women are acknowledged by media to be into a)family background b)money c)education when selecting a partner.
That there would be women fondling a wealthy man to sell themselves to him is normal for them here. 'Daddy on board' could be a classic reference to being condescending to Europeans who have no Father - they're all wife beating step Dad's and paedo's. Again - from a Korean point of view, and again, kind of deserved, especially with Europeans.

Nothing wrong with this add. It accentuates that you are just as vulnerable
on the road as on the street with no protection around you. It was making an analogy that having this system in a car is similar to never having to be struck by rude pedestrians. I understood the purpose of the device quite well from the commercial.

It does insult peoples intelligence and is a boring real world add that wouldn't catch your attention like a woman in a white frock and hat in Europe. Please don't make any commercials soon! |
