I've been offered a job at an Avalon school, but there's a possibility of getting a job offer from an SLP in Gangseo-gu,Seoul. I know that Avalon is fairly large and well-established; what's the scoop on SLPs? |

Slave Labor Program?
The devil IS in the details. Read the contract and make your own decision. It is only 1 year of your life.
(typically, SLP contracts are for 21 classes of 80 minutes (with 10 minute mid-class breaks) making it a teaching load of some 1890 minutes per week for the same salary as someone working 30*50 minute classes (1500 minutes on their feet in front of the class) for the SAME money.
300 minutes works out to about 5 hours per week more class time.
The rest of the contract isn't much better.
Additionally, I have NEVER met anyone at an SLP who had the NHIC medical booklet or was enrolled in the NPS (they were all classified as "contractors" rather than employees.).
Check BEFORE you sign on the dotted line.
Avalon has its own set of quirks to watch out for (again, the devil IS in the contract).

I just finished a year at an SLP branch, no problems at all. Medical, pension and severance were all provided. The company name makes very little difference, the owner of the hagwon makes all the difference in the world. Ask to talk to a teacher before you sign!!!!!!! |

I work at an Avalon school. You get 10 days vacation - 5 of which are preset and you have no say. So take that as you will. |

True! But SLP seem (for some strange reason) to have an higher proportion of complainers. And if this is your first year, you have very little to compare it to. So, op be careful, coming from a veteran I'd say keep running for the hills!! |

Pick your poison
But in saying that...I would avoid SLP.....not just for the reputation but the longer classes and overall less pay in proportion.
I`ve known 1 or 2 people who have worked at Avalon (company owned main branches.)and have been paid on time/pension/severance etc......
Avalon franchises however are simply a lottery. Speak to a teacher there first before deciding and ask the obvious questions. |

I find SLP's no socializing policy a bit insulting, personally. |

Avalon 15-16 classes a week. 70 min classes. Plus you get 3 hours prep time a day. Pay always on time. |

This is no guarantee if you work at a franchised Avalon. |

No Socializing Policy?
Do you mean for students during class? Why would that be insulting?
Or is it for foreign-teachers? (As in, "No socializing with fellow foreign teachers!" ). |

I have two close friends who have worked at different SLPs, both of which had policies where teachers weren't allowed to converse about anything that wasn't work related while at work. My understanding is that it's standard across all branches. |

Speaking from first hand experience, you are wrong. That is not a standard policy across all branches. |
