From what I was told from the start is that a state apostille cannot supersede a Federal document. I too had been hearing that certain states would apostille a Federal document, especially California. This contradicts most everything I know of federal policy, so I always thought of it as a gamble. If this really is a policy change it will definitely be affecting the info. given out on this forum and something to watch.
Hope it all works out for you! |
A friend of mine did hers in Boston and had no problem. Austin, Texas wouldn't do it, so I had to deal with D.C., unfortunately. Yes, you're supposed to technically go through the state department, but it is mess over there, and if you do deal with them send it by FEDEX, and have a FEDEX return envelope. It will save you some time. |

Thanks Joshua! I went through Apostillepro and received my cbc back with apostille within one business day. Next step is to find a job.
I need to correct my previous statement. California will apostille the jurat affidavit for your fbi cbc. The notary person I went to, the first time, for the jurat affidavit did not include a sworn statement on the paper. I believe that was the reason why my authentication request was denied. |

So it looks as if taking a trip down to the Office of Authentications in DC is no longer necessary. Just checked my bank account, and they finally withdrew the $8.00 for the background check. This can only be a good thing, right? Unless it takes another 2 months to come to my mailbox. |

| just as an update I had a good friend submit his fbi background check and he got his back in 2 weeks...ended up being just over 10 business days or so. I think they key is sending it 2nd day via fedex with a return envelope. I'm pretty sure it saves weeks off your wait time because much of the wait is the time your document sits around in processing before and after it gets a stamp. |

That's if your state capitol will do it. That's not a secret, man. It should be technically done by the Department of State, but if your state can do it, by all means, then do it in your state. The problem with mailing it to the DOS is that there is a huge crowd of Americans probably who are trying to leave to go abroad and slowing us guys who normally go overseas, so the volume has been out-of-this-world. |

Just to clarify, one doesn't need to send the FBI criminal background check to D.C.if they are in California? So I can just send it to Sacramento?
And after I get the FBI seal, do I need to bring it to the notary first or just send it directly to Sacramento or D.C.?
Thanks |

| I read somewhere that you have to send the FBI check to DC to be apostilled, so I did. It's now going on three and a half weeks and they haven't even cashed my check. I am supposed to be in Korea in mid-October. Does anyone know how long the visa process takes once I do get the check back from our inept government? |

Good question. First to the guy who mentioned getting his FBI background check in 2 weeks. It could be possibly due to it no longer being "high season" for the background checks. Most people who planned to go overseas already did i.e. the bulk of them and most domestic jobs related to government will have already done their checks by now. That's my guess. As far as the Department of State, I don't know if they're close to catching up. They were swamped.
Back to your question, after I got my apostille and sent everything to Korea. That took slightly less than a week. It took 6 days.
6 days for fedexing.
3 days for my visa number if the person rushes immigration (it could take 7 days)
3 days for getting my visa from Houston, some consulates in the US are faster, but Houston asked me for less paperwork. Go to the websites of the consulate you're going to and start filling out the papers and call them.
Let's say it could take you a total of another 12-15 days (It took me 12, it's not a science.) If you get your apostille by say the 15th of September, then you would be ready to go by the 28th or so of September. The state department said it could take them up to 8 weeks, but I don't know now. Did they cash your check yet? If they did not, you could fly in and get your apostille on the same day. The DOS has been flooded with requests. We're in a major recession thanks to George Bush. |

|
|
I'm in South Korea and waiting on my CBC. The charge appeared on my credit card Aug 5th, but I have not received anything.
The downloads at the FBI website included a form for payment by credit card.
I will be looking to see if the Department of State has a similar form. Does anyone know if they will accept payment by credit card. And is their form for credit card payment online and downloadable? |

| From my experience I used Apostille Pro it cost me $175 but I got it back next day. I needed it asap and I got it when they said. Now I didnt find out about US Apostille until after but I called and they claimed next day service for $45 plus return over night shipping slip. |

Does anyone know how long it actually takes to get a CBC apostilled?
Around how many weeks, if you send it in by mail with return postage? |
