Hello all,

I am hoping to move to Korea soon and will be bringing my Mexican wife and son. My wife speaks intermediate English, but it would be great for her to meet one or two Spanish speakers to socialize with.

Does anybody know where there might be spanish speaking communities in Korea? Hopefully I will find work in a major city so that should help, but any thoughts on this topic would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

My family and I are Spanish speakers although it is our second language. My children speak like natives, I still have a "gringa" accent. We have livd in Latin America for two years, the last year in Mexico. I have met a few people in the grocery store who are native Spanish speakers... a couple from Ecaudor and a family from Mexico. So, I am sure there are some out there. I would be happy to be a contact for your wife as well, although I am not a native speaker... I am pretty fluent. [/i]

There's quite a few around. I actually have a friend, Korean woman who speaks Spanish as a second language. She has a Spanish discussion group - mostly Koreans who have lived in Spain, South/Latin America, and she's trying to add more people to the circle. I personally know a few Mexicans, Mexican-Americans, a Guatemalan, and a group of Brazilians (who speak Spanish as a second language). Not like I go looking for these people either - they're just around. You'll have little trouble finding people.

Aw your wife will be fine, she will have no problem meeting people who speak Spanish the only thing is most of them are male and in the army so it could also lead to a breakdown in your marriage.

Thanks to all for your responses. It sounds like we wont have any trouble finding a few people to speak spanish with. My son is only 10 months and I want him to grow up speaking Spanish and English (at least) so it is important that he has some exposure.

tortugaverde: Thanks for the offer. Maybe well be in touch when we finally get to Korea.

adzee1: I dont know where yet (still no good offers). I too have been living in GDL and I hope to find something in one of the 5 main cities in Korea. Let me know when you find out where you are going to be.

nathanrutledge: Sounds interesting, where is that?

evilgenius: thanks for the warning, Ill be careful

This group hosts a monthly meet-up for Spanish speakers and people who want to learn.

http://www.meetup.com/spanish-868/

About half the people who come are native Spanish speakers, the other half are native English speakers who have learned or are learning Spanish. The group usually has dinner, then goes someplace after to hang out. The organizer is from Chile, very friendly.

If anyone is looking for a Spanish teacher, I take skype lessons with an excellent teacher in Guatemala for $10 per hour.
