It takes all of 35 minutes for me to get to Seoul from my apartment in Incheon. 45 to get to Itaewon or Hongdae. My apartment is in a nice, clean building, and my husband can order Pizza Hut or go to Quiznos if he's craving something western and I don't feel like cooking. We can order western products from nicemarket.net or iherb.com, so we don't have to worry about going to the foreign food market every week for western groceries that we prefer to have on hand. There's a park with actual grass a not-too-long walk for taking our puppy, and I live a 15-minute cab ride from the fish market for some of the freshest fish in the country (after Jagalchi, in Busan, of course.) Oh, and we didn't have to lay out 20-30 million won in key money.
Incheon's fine. Rio's in Guwoldong has a large western following if you want to find a local watering hole. Guwoldong has plenty of shopping (it's also known as Art Center) if you like department stores. Homeplus is decent when it comes to finding western products, if you don't mind a lot of Tesco's generic stuff.
If you're from bumblefrak nowhere, Seoul's the place to be. If not, it's just another city. Commuting a half hour to an hour while having a bit more peace is the way to go, in my opinion. |

If you came to Incheon looking for western food and western draught beer ... then you certainly came to the wrong place.
Incheon is actually in Korea and, as you would expect, Korean food and beer rules!
I don't blame you for looking for a better quality beer. Unfortunately foreign draught is not readily available here but it is pretty easy to find Western bottled beers. |

Western food is easy to find in Incheon. I find it for every meal in my KITCHEN. Learn to cook and your tummy will be happy. Gmarket is an amazing place for buying food. Recently I've bought coffee, Thai eggplants, Bob's Red Mill Whole Wheat Flour, powdered milk, French yeast, molasses, couscous, pinto beans, okra, salami, bratwurst, etc. Many non food items can be found there as well.
Yeah western draft beer can be hard to find but I'm not much of a beer drinker so I don't miss it anyway. I grew out of the bars a long time ago and don't really miss them either. However, I find my own fun. My husband and I have friends over for Bar-B-ques and lasagna night. We go to the pool, suana, health club for 3,000 won each, take the dog for walks, or stroll around Bupyung underground shopping. We go to movies and eat pizza. I know plenty of expats who play sports, go on pub crawls, go to art museums and musicals, and film festivals. Incheon is what you make it. |
