The owner of my hagwon kindly decided to let me know today that my school would be closing at the end of the month (as in next Wednesday) and I'm really confused about what to do next. She said that she is willing to pay my airfare home, but I'm not really sure if I'm ready to go back to the states yet. That said, I don't think I want to sign another 1 year contract either.

So basically I'm just wondering if anyone has any advice about my situation. Right now, my plan is to try and get the owner to cash out my flight home and then try to find a job on a shorter contract, maybe six months or so. Is this realistic? It seems like there should be some schools just looking for someone to finish the school year. I guess I could sign another contract and just plan on breaking it, too. I don't know. I'm just really confused right now.

Thanks in advance.

Take your airfare, get a LOR (can't transfer without it) and find a new job.

Sign for a year, give notice and leave at your convenience (it's not like they are paying your airfare in or the cost of a visa run).

Yeah, that makes sense. If I can get cash for my airfare and find a decent new job, I guess this could be a blessing in disguise. The job was never that great.

I am also wondering if there is any action that can be taken on my part because the school did not provide us with 30 days notice. We were told today that the school would be closing in a week. I'm pretty sure that the Korean teachers at my school have already begun discussing legal action, but, as the only foreigner, I want to be as prepared as possible.

Sounds better than what happened to my friend several months ago. If I remember correctly, he said he came in one day and was told it was his last day and the last day the school would be open.

Hell yeah, take the airfare cash and find another job, it will be much easier with you already in Korea, people will hire you quickly. If you have any money owed to you I would pursure it also, since you won't be leaving you'll be able to fight for it (if your boss is that kind person).
