Sorry was tired when i wrote it!
"Not much, maybe 10-15K."
Thats what i was thinking, got a taxi last night and he was asking for 40k told him i'd give him 30k and after a bit of bartering he said ok. I guessed he was still ripping me off cos i'd heard taxis are cheap and that was not cheap, but i just wanted to get home. Won't make that mistake again.
Thanks, just wanted to know for future reference! |

Macheon to Banghwa was only 35K or so, so Hongdae can't nearly be that much.
Make sure you don't get into a prestige cab, those are more expensive. |

Didn't read about the prestige cabs till i got home. Pretty sure he was just trying to get as much money as he could from me really. Glad I refused the 40k and got him to 30k but i felt it was still way too much when i realised how short a drive it was. |

I never had that happen, but always ask for the meter.
I think it averages out to about 1000 Won per minute or so. |

This is the law. If they don't run the meter, you can report them and they get busted. They are cheating their employers, and they are cheating the government on taxes, and usually, at the same time, they are cheating you.
As to the amount, I used to take a taxi from Itaewon to Munjeong Rodeo, and that usually cost about 15k, depending on traffic. Distance-wise, what you're talking about is less, BUT a couple things. 1) they have to cross the river sooner rather than later. If they don't, then they leave Seoul and the meter gets bumped to a higher rate. 2) I used to take that route a few years back, before the rates went up. But, all things considered, I'd say 15-18 is all you should pay for that ride. |

Depends on where you are in Anyang. Around Anyang Station you might even get it cheaper than that if it's metered (I think I've gotten back for around 15-18,000), whereas Indeogwon is more like 25,000. The problem is that it's a bit out of the way regardless, so drivers generally don't want to drive you for the metered price. If you have to barter prices expect to pay at least 25,000, probably 30,000. You shouldn't ever have to pay more than 30,000. As I would imagine you already know, avoid the taxi mafia at the crosswalks and head to the main drag where the station is to catch a cab. I live in Sanbon and after hours it's generally around 25,000 if it's metered, 30,000 if it's not, for context. |

I live near you (Gayang) and got screwed my first ride from Hongdae. Usually I get in about 13 to Gayang.
It's VERY difficult to get a cab between 1am and 4am on the weekends from Hongdae that will take you to that area. It's not a great fare for them when they could get someone going to Incheon that'll yield them 5 times that. The supply/demand curve is super strange in that market, hence taxi drivers expecting insane amounts, or taxi drivers refusing to drive you. I've spent as much as 40 minutes flagging cabs down, getting in, getting kicked out, cursing (and nearly kicking a car) and generally just ruining my good mood from the evening all in the effort of getting home from Hongdae.
Open the damn subways, Seoul. |

I love the taxi service here, but they can get you. Sitting in the front seat and watching the signs helps. I'm an above the river 5,000 Won taxi ride from Hongdae on a bad night, but a couple months ago I was necking in the back of the cab and looked up to see that I was halfway across a bridge! Nearly 15,000 in the end. The following Monday I learned how to say the phrase "stop stealing my money." My Korean stinks, but if the guy seems like a jerk and starts taking some unnecessary turns, I just yell that out randomly during the ride home. |
