Is anyone else having trouble finding a decent hakwon job near Seoul? I started off with high standards, now I just want something half decent. I don't want to work till 11pm or work 50 hours week (around 9am till 730pm I have been offered a few times). Am I asking too much? 9pm would be fine. What happened to those jobs?
I have a year of teaching experience at a public school, which I wasn't able to stay at cause of the GEPIK cuts. Is it all the former GEPIK teachers applying for hakwon jobs that's making it difficult? Or do I just suck? Am I being unrealistic in hoping I can find a job that doesn't look terrible? |

I was in a similar situation. I was hired by GEPIK to start in September, but due to the budget cuts my contract was made void. To make matters worse, my recruiters told me that most hagwons were now looking for females. They threw me about 4-5 completely awful kiddie hagwon jobs before I started looking on my own. I actually found several decent jobs on Dave's ESL job posting board and was offered contracts almost immediately. Not saying it's sure fire, but it worked for me and I somehow made it through these potentially disastrous events. |

???
Maybe just not an hour from Seoul. I was an hour from Seoul last year and didn't care for it.
Any age is fine as long as 100% of my classes aren't kindergarten.
I don't want a split shift, 10 hour day, or working till 11pm.
Are my requirements unreasonable? |

I've been turned down a couple times cause I was told they wanted a female.
I should probably look on my own too instead of relying on recruiters. |

I'm having a pretty rough time too. I've been asked to do one single interview and it was for a position I didn't even want.
I have 6 years experience here in Korea too. All my visa docs ready.
A number of recruiters haven't even replied to my e-mails for positions they were offering. I'm a normal looking white guy too. |

Try getting into a suit and hitting the streets.
Some public schools will hire directly if you simply present yourself and drop off a resume.
If you're not prepared to take on that 9am-7.30 split shift dancing-to-music kindy job...then...then its time to think about China. |

Yes, [Ad Hominem language].
Yes you are being unrealistic.
Keep going for that job in the Center of Seoul.
Don't take any other jobs outside of Seoul. God forbid you teach 2 or 3 classes a day with full benefits outside of Seoul. For Christ's sake what kind of life would that be? Going to the beach everyday and only teaching 2 classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays and 4 classes on M-W-F. Starting at 1pm and finishing at 4:10 pm would be a nightmare if you didn't live in the Center of Seoul.
By the way. I got wifi on my boat which i'm on right now..... |

I would bear in mind that everyone and their uncle wants to work in Korea right now. Plus, there are plenty of the recently unemployed GEPIK teachers who are easier to hire since they're already in the country.
You might need to adjust your expectations in order to get into Korea and then look for a more ideal job after you're on the ground. |

Why is this? Because people post Facebook pictures of themselves of themselves sightseeing, partying, and having fun? Because recruiters have more advanced technological means than before to advertise and get the word out?
A big supply would lead to reduced wages and increased working hours, wouldn't it? And if people are willing to accept that, wages will stagnate or decline further while working hours for that same pay go up. This is already happening, and has been happening for a while. I'm just wondering how much people are willing to take. Where is the tipping point (the point at which working in Korea will no longer be considered a good deal)? What must happen in order for people to get up and leave/not keep coming in such great numbers? |

I'm still looking for a job and thought my inbox would be flooded with jobs....I sent my pic and resume to six recruiters. I got a response from 4 and spoke with them on the phone, but only got 4-5 jobs sent to me in a month. I finally got 2 interviews and offers from schools in Daegu, but did not like the contract on the first one and then 2nd one wanted me to work prior to receiving my visa.
I got an interview on Monday with a school in Guri City and I hope to get that job. I have yet to see any jobs in Seoul and very few in the surrounding areas. I think there are plenty of jobs, you just have to go south a little bit. |
