|
|
Shortly after posting my resume here and a few other places I received about 10-15 recruiter responses. After going through the usual introductory questions and mailing my photo and resume, I have gotten little to no response from any of them.
I have long hair. Not really long, it just barely comes to my shoulder. In all the photos I sent my hair was tucked neatly behind me ears, and I looked "casual", as a couple of recruiters wanted. I'm not a hippie/rocker/punk/etc, I simply have long hair.
Now, I'm sure some might be turned off by my luscious lochs, but is it really a deal breaker, or is the lack of recruiter response simply a sign of the poor job market right now (public school budget cuts and all)? |

You would have at least got 1 response from 10-15 recruiters. Did you tie your hair in a pony tail to look a little more presentable? If you walked into an interview in the United States with that type of hair, odds are you aren't getting the job. From my experience the market isn't great, but it isn't to the point where no recruiters are getting back to me. |

I personally do not think long hair, in of itself, is a deal breaker here.
But, long hair in combination with other demerits (whatever they may be) could be.
From what I have read on Dave's, more people than normal are having a problem finding a job.
Good luck! |

Go to Blue Club and ask for a #2. It should cost less than 10,000 W. |

Do you wear a different hairstyle everyday? Play dress-up? Maybe put some hair clips in to look cute or a scrunchie. Oooh. |

I've seen quite a few blonde hair hippies with beards and sandals cruising the COEX mall, so maybe it's best to keep trying. |

What kind of places are you replying to? I assume hogwans since you are using a recruiter?
Are you white?
Recruiters will forward your crap to any potential schools as soon as they receive it. The individual recruiter could care less what you look like. They only want to get paid. Its the school's Director who has some fucked up vision of what their perfect foreign teacher should look like.
Basically, if you're a blond, blue-eyed white girl (slim) you'll get any job you want. Its only after the Director of a school realizes he/she is not going to get said Aryan masterpiece will they start to consider others. First is males with blond/blue eyes... after that they may consider those filthy brunettes and possible gingers if they have to.
Also a lot of hogwans are trying to adopt a semester approach to things, especially if they have kindy students. They lose an entire block of students in March when the kindy kids graduate to first grade. So they are trying to hire March to March so the teacher is there for a full year of student studies. |

Working at a kindy, I can testify that it's much better for all involved when teachers are there for the full school year. There's no transition period for the new teacher or the students, and there's less handholding required for teachers who've been there for awhile. It makes for a stronger institution. |

I know it's just hair, but I really have no desire to cut it. I like it the way it is.

Yes. I am white, tall, blonde, with colored eyes. The "model" ESL Teacher. I have been applying only to hogwans, but trying to avoid teaching the kindies if I can.
While I'm sure some employers might be hesitant to hire a guy with long hair, I figure I'm mostly being paranoid. I've been searching for jobs for, at most, a week, and I have gotten some offers and replies from recruiters. I know the market is bad right now, I'm just exhausted with the whole deal, spending hours mailing my resume and photos to recruiters and getting up every day to see an empty inbox. At least in local job searching you can get interviews and talk face to face with potential employers. Here you just send your resume and some photos you hope will make them like you into cyberspace and just wait and wait and wait. |

Join the club! It's getting really disheartening. One of the reasons I first chose Korea over other countries was that I thought there was a lot of jobs. I guess I was wrong, but now I really have my heart set on Korea! |
