What a total thug. I hope he gets some jail time for this.

Not sure what happened before the vid, but he definitely comes off as the aggressor.

I wonder if something racial was said to our about him before all of this. Not that it excuses it, but I've heard plenty of stuff about black guys and that would explain the motives.

According to one of the posts in the comments:
"According to the news report, the black man was talking loudly on bus. So for the comfort of all passengers, the middle aged Korean man told the black man to shut up. The gangsta-wannabe then obviously flipped the *beep* out. What made the black man angry was the phrase "Ne gah yeogi anja" (You, sit over here) and the black boy understood ne gah as nigga..."

If you look at the comments section (My Korean is not too good) it seems lots of comments refer to the guy as crazy, s.o.b, and of course the black man comments, ( too many blacks in the country). Comments sections ( here and in other countries) tend to be full of garbage.

In this case it's a little iffy. The Korean is obviously older than the black guy, so it is kind of acceptable for him to use banmal, but usually you wouldn't to a complete stranger unless you are really really old. Most younger Koreans will brush banmal off from and older person, but will complain about it later to their friends.

No, he's just making the joke that when Korean people do this they are excused by the nationalist/racist netizen horde. For example, when the Korean woman beat up the small Japanese girl for not speaking in correct language on the subway. All the comments made by Koreans online were like, "Wow, how could you not speak to this woman politely who was insulting and swearing at you? She is surely deserving of respectful language because she is older regardless of what a witch she is. You are just inviting someone to physically assault you if you use banmal. PS I hate Japs and in a conflict between a Korean and a Jap the Korean can do no wrong."

At the same time, the only time you flip out about banmal is if you are really really old.

IDK, from what I see, at this point in the video, I'd be using banmal too. Yelling, screaming, shaking fists - there would be some definite impolite endings.

Nonsense. Rarely in the real world in most places do people intervene in violent altercations. People have been killed while other people just stood by and did nothing or watched.

And if you had bothered to read you would have seen that Korean bystanders DID attempt to restrain the person.

And to the other posters:

I wouldn't worry too much. Stuff like this has happened before and there have been no race riots or lynching... This too will pass.

Notice how they were restraining the Korean guy early on? Also, someone was filming it - how many people do you think were calling the police?
