you mean this:?

shut your mouth: 닥치고 with romanization: dagchigo

is this what the old man said?

입닥쳐

confirmed that's what he said??

well a quick search brings this:

http://translate.google.co.kr/translate?hl=ko&langpair=en|ko&u=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shut_up

same CULTURAL context? aka fighting words?? or a more "gentle" way to actually say "shut up"?

No, I'm just correcting what you wrote.

I judge people on their behaviour, not their age.

You don't get a free pass for saying "shut up nigger" even if you are 61. It reminds me of the ajummas who bash and barge their way through everyone just because they are over 60.

Sorry but in the west you are expected to act wiser and more polite with age, or you lose all that respect you built up.

yes, something got "lost" in the Korean Confucian translation of age = wisdom, and politeness Wink

had the 60 year old displayed the "virtues" of his age, the behavior of the young guy would've been universally condemned, even by people of his own peer group and had I been on that bus, I would've probably inserted myself into the situation to calm the guy down, even with the threat of it escalating between us had he shown no proclivity toward doing so".

the mocking questioning of "mwoya, mwoya".. by the black guy REALLY makes it more logical that he indeed did think he was referred to as a "nigger" , or being told "shut up nigger". in that context he was mocking.. you don't know.. you don't know what you just said.. you little 'itch"..'
and then as he's losing control his reference to his fists is his way of letting them know that's what happens to people that refer to him that way.

the Koreans don't understand. certainly the old guy doesn't understand. He's still mouthy and even tried to shove and kick the black guy.

so he finally loses it and unloads.

that explanation is too logical. It all adds up now.

on closer inspection, the korean guy doesn't look like your tyical racist ajosshi bigot. I know the type that make comments..and he doesn't look like one of them.

he actually looks genuinely confused like he really didn't mean to insult the guy. So in this case I'm willing to accept it is probably a massive misunderstanding. Maybe he did simply invite him to have a seat.

A little foreign language knowledge is a dangerous thing!

I'd agree. He doesn't look the type. Though appearances can be deceiving

and that's why he does look confused and stubborn when the black guy was screaming "mwoya. mwoya" at him.. and his answer is "mwoya" Laughing

I've seen the guy in the video in Itaewon. He's crazy. I saw him shouting to no one on a street corner near whatthebook...yelling complete nonsense in the pouring rain. He was threatening to blow up someone with ICBMs. He's mentally unstable...for real.

Yea the black buy. I can't see his face, so I'm not sure, but the voices sound exactly the same. I would put money its the same guy...

I stood for about 5 minutes watching this guy go nuts, waiting for something to happen but no one went near him. He had his shirt off screaming about his ICBMs and nukes and how he was harder than Kim Jong Ill. If it WAS him, I would also venture money that the Korean couple is completely innocent. This guy was completely off his rocker...looking to fight anyone that looked at him sideways.

Geez..sorry but I cant help but LOL at all the Dick Tracy's and Sherlock Holmes folks on this thread analyzing and guesstimating what was said before the video began, what said ajussi meant, what said culprit understood....etc etc etc

At the end of the day...regardless of what was said or what was done..here is a foreigner in Korea assaulting (even if provoked his actions went several levels above what was called for) an old Korean man on the bus. Analyze it all you want but in the end it wouldn't matter if the old man called him the dirtiest description of the nword in the clearest of English as possible..that guys behind is in a sling now..

So..I guess we can expect this thread to be up to 25 pages before we hear any real updated news of the situation. Until then...I'm putting my sunglasses on to shield my eyes from the glare all of the shiny internet detective badges being waved around~~~

he could be sitting in a sling or wherever. I/we don't care how Korean "law" perceives this. We care how our own perceptions/conscience perceives him. I wouldn't judge that guy harshly even if he was technically in the "wrong". He clearly has anger management issues. If some Korean guy (especially UNDER 60, because then they're completely 'fair game' and not 'old/elderly) blatantly said to him shut up nigger with full venom and malice, I'd be happy that the Korean got the lesson so richly deserved, with the caveat being that one punch wouldn''t be nearly enough. I'm talking about a beatdown he'd feel for weeks, if not longer.

those are the kinds of "life lessons" that best take hold. No matter WHO is in the slammer.. Or being deported? or paying "blood money", etc.

of course now it appears that the black guy may be a mentally unstable loon. Which means we've wasted 15 pages of valuable Dave's thread. However, I think some interesting issues/scenarios have been raised.

The Korea Herald has the video. The article's in Korean though.

http://biz.heraldm.com/common/Detail.jsp?newsMLId=20110829000023

I get as annoyed as anyone else with ajosshis, but I cannot imagine acting like this or physically assaulting someone like this.

I know his attorney will disagree, but there is no defending this.
He had a chance to show his backside and took it.

Time to pay up.

During my time in Korea, I had a number of older people yell at me while I was on the bus and all of them were unprovoked verbal assaults. Let's face it, the guy in this video could very well have been similarily provoked. He just chose to get nasty right back at them.

And I agree, it will get taken the wrong way by viewers and add to their already high state of disdain for foreigners.

Noted...however what you, nor I, nor what anyone else thinks about what is deserved supersedes the law. If you think it does...just go on out and try the same thing.
