how did he get hired in the first place, based on his appearance and vocal mannerisms?

also, has anyone noticed what a weird turn this thread took around the tenth page? some people are actually SUPPORTING this aggressive, over-sensitive, violent moron who PHYSICALLY ATTACKED an old man (i don't care what ethnicity either of them are).

really, really weird.

Honestly, I worry about people doing this. Unless a teacher's students are adults and the teacher takes a totally neutral approach for a while, I don't think it's a good sample for asking about cultural- and language-based questions.

The word is essentially the equivalent of "mister." The only time I've noticed that it takes on a meaning like you mentioned is when used in a specific tone.

As for the incident itself, I really don't know what to make of it. It's a complete mess, but hopefully my glaring reproachful looks at bad behavior on trains and buses will more than suffice, at least for a week or two. Smile

People change.

No, I'm not meaning over time, I mean in a split second, someone can change. Add alcohol to the mix, and it's even easier.

This guy could be a decent guy most days, but in this video, he's acting like a thug. Get a camera on any man at their worst, and you'd say "that's nothing like so-and-so".

NOT excusing this guy at all.... Just wanting to keep the blame on him. No need to blame his coworkers or manager when we have no idea what he's like otherwise.

That being said, I hope his ass gets deported. This guy should not be teaching here.

Sorry but it is so typical of Koreans to be unable to take the blame for any situation, even when they themselves caused it. If they keep portraying themselves as the eternal innocent victims then they will never get anywhere when it comes to understanding how to relate with and communicate with foreigners.

i'm just guessin' here, but i don't believe anyone MADE this individual move to korea. yeah, this country has elements of pretty intense racism, but hey - THIS ISN'T THE WEST. we can jump up and down and hope and pray that they "see the light" and adopt a perfectly race-free perspective of the world - but who's to say they want to? do you really think koreans want to be anything BUT a homogenous society?

this wouldn't be ok in my country, because it's an extremely multicultural nation. korea isn't. let them do what they want. it really, really, sucks - but if you're willing to move here, you have to learn to roll with the punches.

and if you end up reacting like this guy every time you sense a racial slight, then maybe you should buy a plane ticket back home.

Freaking idiots.

Why do people even give these retards chances...

Before someone accuses me of being racist... I know just as many white people who partake in this as black people who know better.

I'm not accusing you of being racist, more so ridiculously ignorant for judging people on the sole basis of how they are dressed. That's why the idea of you becoming president of some country is comical. I hope you never go to the US. We don't need anymore ignorant clowns like you.

you're right, as always - but he really didn't seem drunk in the video. he seemed . . . unhinged.

i kind of feel bad for the hagwon.

i adored my time in america, for what it's worth. a really great country filled to the brim with friendly people.

don't worry I am culturally sensitive and non confrontational. I also have a great co teacher. It was a broad discussion on the incident what may have been, how it may have been perceived from a non Korean cultural prism. etc. At the beginning I told the class it was the foreigner's fault for initiating physical violence and I noted that even if violence was provoked, the guy's near grandpa age means he was also in the wrong for getting physical with "grandpa".
so I in NO way played the waygoogin apologist here.

one thing I mentioned is that I sometimes perceive (and I noted I could be wrong on this) that in Korea an older person will use age to excuse arrogant and or impolite behavior, whereas my view is what since they're older, if anything, they should be more polite, teaching the younger ones how to act/behave and otherwise setting a good example. while using their life's wisdom to avoid escalating a situation.

my highschoolers all wholeheartedly AGREED.

that was only a small part of the entire thing, but I think we had a good "cultural differences" class. Now they'll also know never ever to use the "n' word., even if in a joking/fleeting manner.

as an aside... unrelated to the above.
what amuses me to no end is that the old guy, already seeing how violent and unhinged the black guy was getting, instead of backing off and or otherwise deescalating the situation, instead plays along to ratchet it up.

seriously. Not only the shove and attempted kick, but the BEST part is he actually GETS up to get back in the black guy's face... before some quick thinking Korean behind him grabs him by the shoulders and slams his wrinly butt into the seat again.

note, I'm not excusing Li'l Jon's behavior (that was funny btw Lil Jon.. LOL) but that old guy is dumb dumb dumb.

Yep, something else to give us a bad name. He was an English teacher. The old man said to be quiet in Korean. Neu geu da or something like that. Black guy thought he said the N word. He didn't say that, but even if he did doesn't give him the right to do that. If he had of said the N word, the other guy should have merely said something really rude back and walked away. Them if the Korean guy hit him, he could hit him back and it would be on.... But this way, the black guy is sitting in Korean jail. Kind of a stupid move on his part.

Old or not, men are known to have fits of pride.

It's been my experience that old men generally do not enjoy sheepishly backing down.

Also makes me realize our culture is severly broken. Sometimes this place can really piss me off. But, there are a lot of problems back home. Every body wants to mess each other up and is walking around with rage.

Ths US is crawling with thugs, especially in California. But its worse than this guy because many stateside are armed. Go ride a bus in California and just merely make extended eye contact with one of these types and see what happens.

I hear the audio but the screen is just green. I don't think he's an American as he doesn't speak like one.

judging by the accent, i'd argue strongly that he's american. he doesn't seem drunk, or anything, either, which is troubling.

and guys, let's get this straight - HE WASN'T WEARING ANY RINGS. he was referring to his knuckles.

i just find it astounding that not one person told the bus driver to stop, open the door, grabbed him, and threw his violent butt out on to the street. we all know how much koreans avoid confrontation, but honestly, that was just weird.

Actually, I'm told everyone held him in the bus and the bus driver drove straight to the police station afterwards.
