The more I look at it, this is clearly a case of 'Ghetto Fabulous' vs. 'Dokdo is Korean'.
Which means in the end what should happen? "Move along, nothing to see here."

supposedly the black guy says that he felt angered being told to shut up (not 'shut up blackie/n-word' like some previous people were trying to fabricate..)
and get this, after he was angered about being told to quiet down, he confronted the man aggressively, but he didn't know what was being said to him in korean... but he felt that the tone was harshly disparaging his race. 
fast forward... that, and along with an admission of guilt and saying he wants to apologize... turns into a nice cop-out, because the prosecutors will basically let him go. it doesn't seem like the man said anything racial to him.. and that whole 니가 issue was a nice internet theory gone awry.. but basically, he can just play the race-card on the admission of guilt for his actions, even though that didn't seem to be the case on the bus. what a sensitive issue... race relations.
no fine at least? no deportation? no.. anything? it doesn't seem like. be a bit remorseful, do some face-saving, and koreans will let you go! push and pull a woman? cause a lengthy disturbance on busy public transit? verbally/physically assault an old guy? no problem, say sorry! (good advice, lawyer... they bought it!)

The case wasn't dropped because he apologized.
It was dropped because it was (obviously, after a 22 page thread and several news pieces)high profile.

My guess is the old ajosshi just wants to safely end the whole thing. Getting blood money is all very well if you're dealing with another korean who plays the game. Its different when you're dealing with a an apparently dangerous lunatic foreigner of unknown quantity..who has already shown he is capable of anything.
I think the guy has been unbelievably lucky. Most foreigners would expect to be beaten by the mob and lose multimillions in blood money payouts.
In some ways this outcome serves the interests of the anti-foreign netizens. They will claim that foreigners not only commit crimes but get away lightly.

Dunno about you but I remember being incredibly angry a lot of times in my first year or two here.
Korea has a way of rubbing up against western sensitivities. Seems to me that foreigners were under a lot more pressure a few years back than they seem to be now, and it goes double if you are black.
What is surprising is that this is the only rage incident of 2011.. in a country of 1M foreigners. Seriously, if a single fistfight is the worst thing you can find and it is so rare as to make national news headlines.. then you can safely say that the new multiculturalism is going pretty well in this country. |

Glad to hear it was resolved (If that is indeed the case)
Now, I wonder if this incident will spawn future incidents of foreigners lashing out in the same kind of fashion.
I can just see the video in my head. Months down the road there will be some pale dude with a backpack yelling at some Korean "Do you see these rocks"???? |

Same here. Whether it's deeper understanding, greater compassion or just thicker skin, learning to peacefully accept things the way they are takes time. I got here in 1996, so hardly anything bothers me anymore. |

that was one of my coteachers theories this morning. Wasn't about "ni-gah" but simply being told to shut up.
She theorized the old man didn't realize how it would come off, used the harsher Korean word, he used a gruff/authoritative/demanding voice (this is TYPICAL for older Koreans when dealing with younger ones, but completely flies in the face of Western sensibilities, if you're not my father you can't talk to me that way or you're looking for a confrontation)
she also said the old guy probably felt safe being so gruff, this being Korea, he being on a bus full of Koreans and because he's "older " (ah yes. the always safe Korean cop out)
I, hearing all of this, merely laughed. But it made sense and I typically trust her implicitly.
now, how would you place your bets?
a) that hogwan never hiring a black male again.
b) that older Korean guy never being so vocally aggressive with a foreigner again.
obvious answer for most is surely "a", but I suspect it's a lot closer than most would expect.
Which in the end, I judge to be a good thing. |

| at least he wasn't sitting on the floor with a beer playing cards. jeez, can't imagine how something so terrible as that would have gone over. if you ask me this guy got off easy. |
