What many supporters and investors in small companies fail to realise is that even if you have a good product, and a market for it, there's simply no guarantee of investing success. Small companies tend to be poorly financed and just a few bad decisions or runs of luck can sink them. Even if they survive, it can take years for them to grow; many never do. Of those that do make it, some are bought out as soon as this becomes obvious, bringing profits to the accquiring company rather than the small shareholders. Others find that their original ideas are quickly copied by larger companies with larger R&D budgets, manufacturing capability and expensive lawyers to help get around patent issues. Of course some become the next Microsoft or Intel.
Hence the appeal in penny stocks.
I remember Peter Lynchs statement on great idea companies but which are not currently profitable. "Every time I feel tempted, I remind myself that you can still get tenbaggers on stocks with actual earnings." Since my investment since then on penny stocks has been less than sucessful, I've learned my lesson and when I next received a large lump sum for investing, I put it into a ETF index fund. Up 8% in 3months.
I will go back to stock picking when I have the time to put in serious research than kidding myself that this company will boom just because I've heard of it. |
