Hi everyone! I am new to this forum. I am currently looking for a teaching job in korea, after having just finished my TESOL course. I have recieved a couple job offers and i was wondering if anyone has (or knows anyone who has) worked at either of these 2 hagwons, or knows anything about them.
Topia Sungnam
Avalon in Gwangjin, Seoul (its a corporate school, not a franchise)
Any information about these schools would be amazing, and ASAP is preferred

Avalon offers only 10 days vacation, 5 of which they tell you when to take. So in reality you only get 5 days vacation. They also just started doing student ratings, so I think it is more important that the students like you than you actually teach them. |

I would go with the Seoul position, but I'd probably only take one of those jobs as a backup plan. |

Porksta-- Is this not pretty standard for hagwons? There aren't many public schools hiring right now, so I think ill be going with a private school, regardless.
Gorf-- What would you suggest as a better private school? I keep seeing people's comments about 'holding out for a better job', but no one really says what the better jobs really are. Any ideas? I definitely want to be in Seoul, or very nearby.
Thanks for the fast replies,

Hi Molly
My name is Erin and I work for an online TEFL Company. (TEFL and TESOL are actually the same thing!)
Congratulations on completing your TESOL course! You must be so pleased
Im sure youll be eager to talk to others who have first hand experience of teaching in Korea (and can give you the best possible advice!)
Why not take a look at our Chalkboard site? Its an online community dedicated to TEFL (teaching English as a foreign language). Here you can chat, get great tips and view some amazing photographs! Im sure youll get your questions answered and more!
Heres the link to the Korea group:

I hope you find this useful,
Thanks!

Two of my friends worked for Avalon in Ilsan and they didn't like it, but another one I know is taking a job with Avalon. If you don't realy need a lot of holidays and want to make tons of cash to pay off debts work for CDI. Avalon won't work you as much. There are no holidays really with CDI, but you'll make huge checks. I can't say not to go for Avalon or not. It seems like a standard hagwon gig that you're looking at. |

Molly, the best way to go about this is to ask the hagwons for the contacts of the foreign teachers currently employed there and contact them personally.
The mileage with hagwons varies differently and often changes every year too, so for example the place I worked at 2 years ago (relatively good) has now become horribly bad and is about to go bankrupt
talk to the teachers and ask them if it's worth it
they will probably not lie to you |

You'll make huge paychecks with CDI? Where did you get that information from?
My impression is that it was possible to make good money at CDI a number of YEARS AGO, but that it's pay is just average now, even with the hourly option. |
