yeah, this still doesn't make much sense. he isn't being punished in the slightest, which we all know is not how korea normally operates.

Thanks for the update.

Except for the woman being his g/f bit, it is exactly what I thought: he was heavily provoked.

I'm amazed at the number of people on here that never picked on that and instead focussed on demonizing the black man.

Yea, even though he was provoked, he was still in the wrong. Violence should not be how a problem is solved among sane, rational human beings. If he had just continued to cuss out the old man, I would have been fine with it.

Could it be possible that posters are not demonizing a black man but demonizing a violent thug. Some seem obsessed with race as if no black person can do any wrong. He punched an old man, he is a coward , and a criminal. W hat is 100 percent provoked sqay compared to 97 percent provoked? Perhaps that is a legal term that I am not familiar with.

Provoked or not, the American went way over the line.

Maybe the old guy yelled at him. Maybe he told the American to shut up. Heck, maybe he even called him names.

Heck, maybe the old guy even hit him before the cameras were rolling.

But from the clip released, it was the American who moved towards the old man and initiated the assault.

He needs to be held responsible.

As to the SBS report in the OP, why put so much stock in it? When SBS did a report on English teachers, it was nearly unanimous here that SBS was a joke. I see no reason to believe it is absolute now.

The foreigner could have been talking too loudly on his phone and upsetting the guy and other passengers.

This. It is a pretty wide held opinion that the English papers here (not all but ones like the KT and KH) are fifth rate journalism at best. Especially when they do a negative report on English teachers then they are torn apart.

But let one of these post something that puts foreigners in a positive light (like the crime stats for example) and they are held as bastions of infallibility.

There are important people in Korea who want this entire episode to go away, for political reasons.
