Please Korea, I can take the xenophobic tendencies, but at least change this!
Who has had their landlord or handyman knock on the door unannounced and had your place a complete mess. It wasn't really that messy, and I spent a good hour or so cleaning last week (the floor and kitchen area), but didn't touch the bathroom.
Of course, he wanted to come in and inspect the bathroom ceiling since their were some leaks from all the rain we've had this summer.
I don't get it. Does it REALLY have to inspected RIGHT NOW?
Can you give me a heads up that you'll be stopping by the next morning so I can clean?
I'll never understand this behavior. Never.
I know what they thought: 더러운 외국인 lol!

Unannounced?
No problem.
Just walk around the apartment naked, scratching yourself, picking your nose etc.

I'm not knocking what you think is important, I'm sincerely curious:

Why in the world would you care if your handyman thinks you're a dirty person? But, more generally speaking, why do people get mad at others over this whole cleaning fiasco? Is it similar to them reading your diary without asking?

Purely for the added shock value that must amuse them as they walk in and see your face, lol.

Yeah, many agents here have no sense of propriety and the sanctity of personal space. A real estate agent decided to invite herself in one Saturday night. I barely got in my boxers and the girl barely jumped behind the kitchen slide doors before she barged in. This the night before they forced me to move 9 floors up. I was livid, but really couldn't draw out up the appropriate curses for the situation.

The best thing you could have done was walk out and say "Hi!stark naked, preferrably with a condom still on your johnson. That would have enacted more revenge than any amount of cursing in either language. She would have been mortified and it would have been well-deserved.

In Korea, yelling looks bad, and getting even often requires a subtle change in tactic. Nonetheless, revenge is still very satisfying.

Oh man. I've been living in Korea for 4 years and there are few things I truly HATE about life here, but this is one of them.

I'm not a very clean person, and when someone comes over (even just a handyman), I like to spend a little time cleaning so the person doesn't think I'm a slob. And don't even get me started on them just walking into your apartment. . .

A few months ago, when I had just moved into a new apartment, a handyman came by totally announced (note- he wasn't fixing anything, he was just checking to see if my gas had been connected. It had, there was no problem and nobody asked him to check on this). I was in the shower and had stupidly forgotten to lock the door. He walked in and MUST HAVE HEARD THE SHOWER, and starts fiddling around in my kitchen (in my messy apartment). I could hear him while I was in the shower and was so FURIOUS that I turned off the water, threw my pajamas on without even drying off, flew out of the bathroom in a rage, screamed at him in English, literally pushed him out into the hallway, screamed some more, slammed the door in his face and locked it.

I mean seriously- what middle aged man thinks it's okay to walk into the apartment of a 20 something girl WHILE SHE'S SHOWERING? In America, that would strike me as the scene for a rape.

I never forget to lock my doors now.

@Quack

Yes, that's not what I meant. I meant that most Americans would see something blatantly wrong with that scene. Whereas Koreans do not . . .

I complained big time to my school's secretary and made her call him, and she seemed to think I was making too much of a fuss . . .

I wouldn't say that "Koreans see nothing wrong with it".

My wife told the real estate lady to get real when she tried to drop in with only a few moments notice. The woman was a bit pissed, but what could she do?

The real key is... Who has a key?

This happens ALL THE TIME.

Gotta love the knock PLUS simultaneous entry. If yer gonna do that, what is the point of the knock?

No sense of boundaries at all. At least show them you're pissed off about it. They may get the hint (ok, 2% chance).

I asked my boss about this, it was explained as "just old ajosshi style." He talked to the maintenance staff and now they at least wait a solid two seconds after the knock. It's a start!

Maybe buy a door jam if it happens a lot.

Are you kidding? She would have seen the comparatively massive weigook schlong and would have started lusting after every mighty whitey she ran into.
