|
|
Hi all,
I've been finding it hard to get a decent TEFL job in South Korea. Is it a good idea to just go to Seoul and look for a job there? Bring my best suit and charm and just walk into schools?
Thanks! |

Have you done any searches on the visa process for when you do find a job? |

Good luck.
If you do that and you aren't on an F4 you will have one very expensive experiment in job hunting.
Jobs are hard to find because there are a bunch of PS teachers who didn't get renewed for the fall term scrambling for work. It may take a couple of months for them to all get absorbed back into the system.
You have NOTHING over them - you are untried and unproven in Korea.
You chances won't improve a lot by flying here and you do complicate your own life entering on a 90 day stamp, not getting paid for your airfare and having to deal with your living expenses for a month or 3.
Stay where you are and keep trying.
If that isn't fast enough for you, look at China (salaries are lower but the cost of living is close to "0" if you get a good school (housing, utilities, food allowance, airfare reimbursement, medical) plus your salary.

If you are not on an F4 visa, it would be a waste of your time like Tom stated. Without recruiters it would be hard for you to find the schools, unless you can speak and read Korean. Get your documents then start looking. It doesn't seem like any more offers have been given to me since I've been in Korea vs when i was in the states. Only difference is, now I have to go to in person interviews and give them teaching demonstrations. |

Have you posted your resume on Dave's? That should get you about 20 recruiters sending you an email in 2 days. Respond to all and go from there. It has been slow for me, but hopefully once I have my F4 it will pick up a bit. Have you had no offers or interviews? How long have you been looking and how many recruiters are you using? |

I went in very naive about a month ago and just used the one, Footprints. Was recommended it by a friend. They interviewed me and all went well then said I should be gone by the end of Sept. I got the last of my docs ready 2 weeks ago and they said they have nothing for me.
I've put my CV up on Dave's and got replys but I'm turned off a lot of them by the bad English and the too good to be true offers.
I've since signed up to a few more agencies but some just haven't got back to me. I've just quit my job too so am desperate to go now!
I'm going back to university next Sept so I want to go ASAP! |

Maybe you should look for a high paying job that doesn't require TEFL training. Since you want to leave, the pay scale is not going to increase for you. So, there is no need to be more qualified. I assume you are just taking a break or need time to save up some cash. Look at the other job offers. I get emails regularly (though not every day) now that offer 2.0-2.4 jobs. |

Why does bad english put you off? The language abilities of a recruiter have absolutely no bearing on the jobs they have access to. If you're really desperate to get away then you can't afford to be quite so picky. |

Yeah I have been picky with it all. That's all stopped now though. The broken English was just an automatic turn off, don't know why, just was. But if it has no bearing on the jobs they have then that's that's great! I'll put my CV up again with a new view.
Cheers lads |

They are all going to have bad English expect for a few. It is their 2nd language! I've ran into 2-3 recruiters with good English, but they are based out of Canada. |

I've contacted many recruiters but nothing seems to be working. Can anyone advise me on how to get a job? I get so many replies from putting my CV up on Dave's, but after I reply beack I get nothing.
I've tried everything and since I have all my documents ready I want to go ASAP.
Thanks |

Look at these offers:
http://www.eslagent.net/english/main.php
http://www.jobpostingkorea.com/
http://www.atcrecruiting.com/
I never worked with them, but they regularly send me email. Half of them I wouldn't pursue, the other half you might find 2 or 3 that stand out and hopefully one will be suitable.
Also, remember this. These offers are like cars being advertised. You go to the dealership and they will bait and switch you. So, even if you don't see any you want, pick the best one and see if there are others they haven't advertised yet. I gave up on Beijing in April, so I looked elsewhere. I contacted a recruiter and she said, "Well, if you are already in Beijing, how about a different offer in Beijing?" That's where I work now. Talk to them on the phone too. |
