As above -- from what I have been reading, there are other routes but when it comes to criminal record checks, Disclosure Scotland is the preferred method?

Is there any reason to pursue another route?

Also, anyone applied for background check from outside the UK? Do you have any advice, warnings; how long did it take?

I have dual citizenship, British and Belgian. Currently living in Belgium. Any advice MUCH appreciated!

Yeah just use Disclosure Scotland. There are other routes I think, but they're much more time consuming (involving visits to police stations etc) and complicated. Disclosure Scotland are very quick and pleasant to deal with.

You might get a few recruiters saying "We need you to get a NATIONAL CBR check, not a local one" believing that DS is the equivalent of only getting an in-state check in America - but it was never a problem after I explained how things work here.

Sweet, thank you! I've asked for an application form ... now just waiting to see how long it takes to come through the post!

ignore the bit about being in the country to apply online. how do they know?

I don't have an address in the UK :S

Maybe I should rack my brains a little more for UK-based acquaintances I can beg a favour off?

in that case it would probably be a problem. the mail order is your best bet.
