I wonder if anyone has come across any Korean movies made about the occupation? Maybe some documentaries? I'm just curious to see a dramatization of it. Historical curiosity I guess. Korean language movies are fine, I'm sure if they were made in the last decade or two they'll have English subtitles.

Thanks for you help.

The Immortal Yi Sun Shin is a TV show about the Imjin War with the Japanese, which isn't exactly what you're talking about, but I thought it was pretty cool---except the Japanese bad guy, the boss Japanese, was completely insane, ridiculously bloodthirsty, pure evil. I saw only one or two episodes a very long time ago but the guy seemed to be cutting off people's heads at random for the usual arbitrary purposes. My Korean wife and I got into a fight after I giggled a little too much at the craziness of it all.

don't count on english subs - not even for current run movies or documentaries.

2 movies come to mind, YMCA (about 10 years ago) and Taeguki. Both were box office hits in Korea so you should be able to find them (or get your Korean friend to help you). Both were released to DVD. I don't remember the actors names. sorry.

I've seen Taeguki, it's a War film, right? I was looking for something more along the lines of Korean version of "The Pianist" or "Schindler's List."

Yeah. There is a few. You might wanna try the "General's Son" trilogy these are movies from the '90's about the occupation era. (True stories, too.)
I saw them with English subs a long time ago, not sure where you could procure these with subtitles here in Korea though.

I am.. NOT.. suggesting.. piracy...

The Japanese wanted to make the Koreans Japanese, not exterminate them.

yeah totally. If you exterminated your own language, culture, and traditions and acted like Japanese and yelled banzai to the emperor every five seconds, they let you be. Although they'd still call you Chosenjing and look down on you.

It's totally different from the Jews and other inferior nationals in the Third Reich who totally denied their culture and traditions and yelled Heil Hitler, eh? They were left alone, although they'd still be called Mischlinge and looked down upon.

If there are many films around set in the occupation era, then they certainly aren't well known or shown on TV much.

I've never seen or heard of such a film. Perhaps it's a period most Koreans like to feel aggrieved about, but would rather not go into the murky and maybe shameful detail of.

Let's just say, it's definitely not a period many older chaebol family members like to talk about.
