She was probably just a friend or acquaintance. People tend to assume that a man and woman associating together are a couple.

he only got in his face after the ajosshi had kicked out at him. Up til then it was obviously just going to be words and nothing else.

Either you have double vision or you watched a different video to me. Perhaps you are referring to the part where he slaps his own face as a challenge. Or perhaps you count the moment that he rests his left arm on the guy prior to punching him... as a blow.

Look more closely. She had grabbed his arm: he pulled his arm free and she was pulled with it.

You're ignoring the fact that he had hurled abuse at the guy long before the filming cuts in. He had obviously kept pushing it until theblack guy finally got angry. Thats right around the time he went quiet.
I don't believe that an older man has a license to abuse anyone as he sees fit. I will give them a lot more leeway than anyone else but then there comes a line where people need to suffer the consequences of their behaviour.
We live in a society where men get away with all kinds of BS just because they have two XX chromosomes. It has to stop. So must the idea that reacting to provocation is worse than making provocation.
Part of the problem is that ajosshis have been encouraged to view foreigners as easy prey. We don't speak korean, so they think they can say whatever they like.. and in any altercation they know their courts will always take their side. Maybe this incident will go some way to changing this attitude.

I see no reason not to because there were many Koreans on the bus. Thus they could not have gotten away with printing lies.
To be honest I'm amazed that SBS didn't take the koreans side. Maybe they found it humiliating and just wanted the issue to die quickly. |

The guy was sitting down. In order for the ajosshi to kick out at him the guy have physically HAD to have been in his face.
Duh.

Perhaps to us who are all familiar with urban slang and whatnot, do you think it was obvious to him and the lady?
I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that they've had minimal exposure to that kind of act in English.

Epic Fail.

Again, answer this please- if the roles had been reversed (big young Korean guy acting all "hard", old black man sitting down who had told the young Korean guy to stop yelling into his phone, etc. etc.) who would be right and who would be wrong?
I'm guessing you would be calling out the young Korean guy.
Because it seems to me that its not the circumstances that are determining who is right and who is wrong for you, it is their ethnicity and background.
The ajosshi is wrong because he is Korean.
Unless I'm wrong and you would support the notion of some gangsta dressed Korean guy getting all up in some 55 year old black man's face who had told the guy to stop talking so loudly on his cell phone.....
Again, not saying ajosshi is right. I think its a case of two idiots crossed paths.
Actually looking at the "reverse" situation above...removing race from the question I think its totally great when old people tell the young not to act like rude, immature dolts. If an old black man did that, good for him. Maybe I'm being to hard on ajosshi as well.. |

I'm not ignoring it at all... I'm saying that if some old dude is calling me names, it does not give me license to go up and punch him in the head.
I notice how you're ignoring how the American treated the woman as well. Wasn't the woman yelling "Stop it, Mister!" in Korean? Kind of an odd thing to say to your friend/boyfriend. And the American tossing her around... is it now ok to do that if someone tell you to stop doing something?

Oh really? If you don't know what you are talking about why not just be quiet?

| The atmosphere has been different since this incident. Even yesturday I was out with my Mongolian GF and some ajussi who happened to clock us as he walked past muttered under his breath 'All the same!' followed by some grunts and 'aisch' sounds that were very clearly directed at us. |

The morning after the incident two ajosshis- a taxi driver and a shopkeeper- were exceptionally nice to me. It was noticeably abnormal.
I reckon the incident had a good effect. |

Zifa, we're guests here. This is not our country. It's not like walking in Brookly and having a white guy insulting you, and then you clocking him. It's a different context. You're going to be outnumbered, so you're taking a risk by hitting a local. If he were in say Kuwait, he'd be in the hospital no matter how big he is. And, I did see him hit him more than once. I saw where the ajossi was pushed toward the glass of the bus and the dude was pretty much on top of him.
Again, the guy was about 60, a grandpa type. Hitting a grandpa is not self-defense. He clearly assaulted grandpa. What challenge is there in hitting an older guy? There is no challenge at all. Most people in the US, African American or not, would say the guy was being stupid doing that in a foreign country and assaulting someone who was much older than him.
I can't fathom why anyone would defend that American male in this case. His behavior was rather shameful. |
