Hi,

I've been working hard and I need to let loose and have some fun! I'm a newbie to Seoul, which means I'm still in the process of meeting people and figuring out the hot spots. I was wondering if anyone knows of any good clubs that play electro, dirty house, progressive house, witch house, anything house! Also, preferably not too expensive and in the Hongdae and/or Itaweon area. But I'm willing to go anywhere that's good.

I researched some clubs like Club Eden, Club Answer, Club mASS, and Club Garden. How are these if you've been? My impression is that they are upscale and you have to dress up. I want the inside scoop of some awesome clubs that are more underground and grungy. I like to sweat when I dance and not worry about looking poised and perfect.

It's more controlled and minimal. A little dark. I can't think of a accurate way to describe it. But Wikipedia does a great job at it lol..

Witch house isn't house, it's rnb made by white hipsters. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing.

And if you're looking for somewhere that is a little more underground, good luck. Pretty much all the places I've been out to in Seoul - and I don't go out very often these days, it's true - are pretty 'sceney'. Seoulsucker will probably come along and disagree with me in a while though.

Being the unofficial Dave's nightlife expert, I'll chime in.

You've researched most of the big superclubs so you're a bit ahead of the game. Each of the big clubs do have their own kind of sound/style from their residents, but with guest DJs playing a most of them on weekends for events and parties hosted by outside promotion it does become a bit of a mixed bag that bleeds over genres.

Ellui - mostly tech house and techno. Residents Mang Esilo and Unjin (a.k.a. East Collective) are a solid production team that really rip minimal and tech house. However, the club is huge and has a couple of spaces with different sound. (Diplo, Ferry Corsten, Alex Kenji have all be guests this year)

Eden - tech house and progressive, mostly. (UMEK, Mark Knight, Funkagenda have been recent guests)

Answer - electro and progressive

Volume - mostly tech house and house (Fedde Le Grande, Bingo Players)

M2 - tech house and techno (Hed Kandi are frequent guests here)

mASS - techno, electro, tech house, progressive (lots of good progressive acts visit here...Daniel Portman, EDX and the like)

New to the scene is Holic, though I haven't been yet.

With the exception of M2 and Volume, which have reasonable drink prices, prepare to pay a pretty penny for cocktails and bottle service at the others...however, the scenery at clubs south of the river is often worth the extra coin.

There are a handful of smaller basement bars in Hongdae and Itaewon that deliver the genres you mentioned. LUV, B1, Vera come to mind.

Also, check out 88 if you get the chance...absolute afterhours MADNESS.

hey dcozzi. Just wonderring if you found anything worthwhile. I too am into the same kind of music. Not much of that out here. However if you are looking for artists/designers/musicians. I met a lot of cool people at Exit Bar which is by Hong Dae park where all that hanging out happens. Let me know if you know of anything and vice versa.

I actually go to Exit often, but usually at the end of the night when I want to change scenery, but not go home yet. I do like it there!

So far I've just been going to events, which recently have been one after another: Moguai, DJEDJOTRONIC, and Global Gathering. Also, Boys Noize is just around the river bend (Oct. 2.

But I do like Club Answer, M2, and Naked in Hongdae. Exit Bar as well.

But outside Hongdae, I like Club Holic and Club Volume.

Those are the only places I've been which have good house and variations of. I get my dance on!

I'm gay so I've also been researching gay clubs and apparently Pulse in Itaewon is good. (This is also for anyone who reads this thread and is interested in non-heteronormative clubs).

That's all I know thus far! Still on the look out.

Hi seoulsucker,

I've only been to Queen and another one that you had to go down stairs to get to. I don't know what it's called. I'm not a huge fan of Queen, though. It's too packed and caters too much to mainstream gay culture, and I don't identify with that scene. That's also why I don't usually go to gay clubs. I only ever go if the music is good. It's all about the music!

I'm up on just about everything club related that happens in Seoul, but unfortunately that's about the extent of my knowledge of the gay club scene in Seoul.

Try stopping by on a weeknight when it's less busy or checking out Eat Me. A lot of the original Queen crowd congregates there because they find Queen to be a bit too...well, gay for them. A lot of these guys spend time in clubs south of the river and in Hongdae as well.

If all else fails, just log in to GRINDR the next time you're in a big club. You might be surprised who you find there.
