Black unemployment surged to 16.7% in August, its highest level since 1984, while the unemployment rate for whites fell slightly to 8%, the Labor Department reported.
"This month's numbers continue to bear out that longstanding pattern that minorities have a much more challenging time getting jobs," said Bill Rodgers, chief economist with the Heldrich Center for Workforce Development at Rutgers University.
Black unemployment has been roughly double that of whites since the government started tracking the figures in 1972. |

The same goes for the UK, which is perhaps why most of last months rioters were black. |

My guess is its worse for some blacks as it is for others and based on education level and practical skills levels.
The explosion of blacks into the middle class in the '80s and '90s has largely gone unnoticed. Since a large number of blacks live in urban areas, are under educated and in an area that has a dearth of working class and middle income jobs, its no surprise.
I would assume that college educated and skilled (computer, blue collar skills like plumbing, car repair, etc,) have a much better employment record.
The least educated and skilled no matter the race or ethnicity will always have a higher unemployment rate than the average. I think the lesson here is to improve the educational and vocational levels of the lower socioeconomic blacks (and whites and latinos). |

Really? I thought it was across a wide range of nationalities and it was youth movement. I saw all kinds of people on the news. I am not saying it wasn't but it wasn't reported as a mostly black event. The news reports I saw of social media and networking sites such as twitter, etc. being used to organize looting were by whites mostly. Interesting. |

Yet, cities in regions with very low black populations and high unemployment, such as Wales, Scotland, and the North East, did not see similar riots. |

Unfortunately for the black middle class, the recession has hit them much harder than other ethnic groups. So after working their way up, too many just fell right back down.
As far as having a college degree is concerned, blacks (at least in the US, can't really speak for elsewhere) are better off than their unskilled counterparts, but are still worse off than similarly qualified whites: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/01/us/01race.html
It's like what my grandfather told us recently ~ white people are generally preferred. And, as long as there are white folks unemployed, it'll be doubly difficult for a black person to get the job. They're going to hire whites first. (I mean this as a general statement of trends, not every single individual case.) |

That's the same impression I got. It was a matter of age/class, rather than race. |
