Chito and Pocho play together
Tue, 28 Sep 2010 5:56p.m.
Chito and Pocho are a loving, but odd couple who have hardly spent a day apart in the past 20 years.
Pocho refuses to leave Chito's side no matter what and Chito feels things wouldn't be exactly right without Pocho.
The odd thing about this relationship is that Chito is a 52-year-old Costa Rican fisherman and Pocho a deadly 17ft (5.18 metres) crocodile.
Chest deep into the water with his 444kg mate, Chito plays with Pocho exactly in the same way as if it was a dog.
Pocho rolls over, wrestles with him, allows Chito to hug him and even give him affectionate kisses.
The fisherman made friends with the crocodile after finding him with a gunshot wound on the banks of the Parismina river two decades ago.
The croc had been shot in the left eye by a cattle farmer and was close to death.
Chito enlisted the help of several pals to load the massive reptile into his boat and brought the reptile home.
The fisherman says he took care of the crocodile for months, even sleeping next to him at night.
He also started to play with him.
Once Pocho recovered from his wound, Chito released him in a lake near his house but he says the animal simply got out again and followed him home.
Still Chito says it took years before he felt that Pocho had bonded with him enough to get up close and play games with the animal.
Four years ago, Chito showed some of his tricks to friends, including getting the animal to close his eyes on command.
They were so impressed that they convinced him to go public with a show and the couple have been entertaining visitors ever since.
View the video here...hard to believe (the guy's just a fisherman, no animal trainer background)...someone ought to hook him up in Vegas and make him a bundle ('tho the croc would probably get annoyed and lose the affection)...

| Yeah it is funny they named him Pocho... the damned behemoth oddly seems more cuddly and loving then your average pooch. |

| I can't help but feel that relationship won't end happily. When are people going to learn that some animals (ie tigers, primates and crocs) cannot be domesticated? |

I tend to agree but the fisherman A) originally let the croc go only to have it return and B) has known the croc for like 20 years. Obviously the fisherman keeps the croc well-fed but it's still a neat bond. |

The one thing that is certain about wild animals is that they are unpredictable. Ask Siegfried and Roy about it. |

Strangely enough, as pointed out above the croc is the one who initiated the basis for the current love fest.
Didn't think crocs/cold-blooded reptiles had it in them, but there you go; save a creature's a life and they may repay your kindness, as the old stories have it. |

Or this guy...

It's an interesting article and story, but all it takes is a second for everything to go horribly wrong. Even if the animal had no malicious intent, accidents can always happen. Props to him for taking care of an injured animal, but hopefully the story has a happy ending and not a tragic one. |

| I bet my money that the gunshot wound somehow damaged the croc's limbic system, suppressing his aggression. |

Yeah I was thinking something similar. The bullet could have gone through the eye into the brain. Maybe the croc got some kind of brain damage. Either way, ticking time bomb.
Good luck to them. |
