I arrived in Cheongju yesterday and I feel a little lost! My school seems good and managed to set up a bank account no problem.I want to explore the city a little. I also want to watch the football (soccer) at the weekend and want to know what bars show the football and where they are.
Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks |

I lived in Cheongju for about 8 years or so. Try Road King bar. They keep football on the screen most of the time, and they have about half a dozen or more TVs. The expat:local ratio is about 50:50 at peak hours. They have darts and a pool/billiards table. I always go there when I visit Cheongju. It's friendly and pretty laid back most of the time, and they have live bands playing every week or two. Sometimes expat bands, sometimes local bands, sometimes mixed. Give it a whirl.
Road King is near Sah-chang-sah-go-ri, not far from Chungbuk National University's "middle gate." 충대중문, 사창사거리, 로드킹. |

It's one of 3~4 places where foreigners tend to hang out. I think some of the other places have changed names or locations in the past year or so, so I'm not sure about them. |

British grammar is so weird!
I've never heard of any sports bars, though. Might want to try out a HoF. |

Hi,
You want to head for the ChungBuk University part of town. "Chung Dae Jung Moon" to the taxi driver. You'll get off near Lotteria.
Just past Lotteria, there's a convenience store with a large outdoor patio where you'll probably run in to groups of expats on a weekend night and they can give you more specific directions to bars. All the bars favoured by ex-pats are here.
There is RoadKing it shows sports and has occasional live music. I'm not a big fan of that place so I can't tell you too much about it. It tends to attract a more North American crowd.
MJ is in the next building on the top floor. It shows English Premier League games every weekend, has some live music and DJs.
Pearl Jam is an attempt at an Irish Bar with great bar food. It shows some sporting events
Buzz is aimed more at the club/Hip-Hop/RnB scene.
All these bars are on the upper floors of buildings so look up for the signs.
There is a local ex-pat football team the CheongJu Tigers. They are sponsored by MJ. They are a welcoming bunch so if you want to play ask around at MJ.
The Korean pro football team are CheongJu Jikji. Some of the lads from the CheongJu Tigers follow them and go to games. Again, you'll find most of these guys at MJ or Pearl Jam.
CheongJu has a very friendly expat crowd. Get yourself off to Chung Dae and take it from there. |

I was in Cheongju for a night a month or two ago, and I can attest that these instructions are spot on. My friend and I could not have been more pleasantly surprised. The area zeppelin mentions is a great time, the bars run great deals on drinks and drafts like Kilkenny, and the people of Cheongju, both foreign and Korean, seemed pretty friendly. |
