I bought a cheap(ish) notebook recently while on vacation in the US and when I got back to my university in Seoul I was moved to a different office. I have the IP address, the subnet mask, the default gateway, and the DNS numbers.

How do I go about entering all of these numbers into my new computer (after hooking up the ethernet cable, of course) so that I can get onto the university server?

By the way, there is wireless service in the office, too (LGU), but it is extremely slow (like 3-5 minutes to open any site, if it opens at all).

Any advice??

Many thanks in advance!

The University has one IT guy but my teaching assistant gave up after 30-45 minutes on the phone with him. Apparently, they couldn't get my US purchased computer to connect because it lacks a way for them to enter all of the IP related numbers.

By the way, the computer uses Windows 7 Home version, but I am not sure about the IE version. I will check it when I go back to work on Wednesday.

Thanks

If you want to connect to a server those settings are not the ones you need. Those are internet connection settings.

To connect to a server and interact with a shared drive, you first need to join a domain and then map the drive.

but depending on your version of windows you may not be allowed to join a domain. windows 7 home premium cannot join domains because it is only geared towards home use.

Only windows 7 ultimate or enterprise can join a domain.

But your first post still has me confused about whether you want to just use the internet or access a network server.

Have you tried entering those numbers into their respective places?

Control Panel-
Network and Internet-
Network and Sharing Center-
Local Area Connection-
Properties-
Highlight 'internet protocol version 4 (TCP/IP/v4)
Properties-

Then enter the IP and DNS numbers.......

check to 'use the following IP address'

Check to 'use the following DNS server addresses'

That's how I was able to get on my school's network recently. Using W7 Ulitmate (eng).

PS, don't let any tech guy tell you that you can't do it because you're using English Windows. Absolutely untrue.

But it's amazing how many IT guys in Korea think that a computer running English windows can't be configured for networks and installing Korean software in the same way as a computer running Korean Windows. Lots of ignorance around about this one.

English Windows seems like kryptonite to Koreans IT guys.....even though the exact same thing is done regardless of language.

If its just the internet you need, the first question you need to ask them is how their IPs are allocated.

If they use DHCP, then every new computer that is connected is automatically given an IP address "lease" as you will retain it as long as you access that connection regularly.

If they use a fixed IP address system, you will need to be allocated an IP address to use that is not already in use by another device.

Once you have that info nailed down Eamo has pointed you in the right direction for where you need to enter the details.

In defense of the Korean IT guys, I just had to troubleshoot a Macbook in Norwegian and its not much fun. I ended up getting a 2nd Mac in English and sitting the two side by side and replicating each step done in English.
