				| 5 days off
I got 2kg of oyster mushrooms. I was gutted when I discovered they can't be eaten raw (good thing I looked that up) because it's going to be a battle to get through them all. It's cool to get a present though. Apparently I'm not expected to give anything back until new year

				| From my boss my husband and I got an entire case of mangoes imported from the phillipines. From the students so far I got 2 huge gift-packs of the fancy rice cake, a soap/lotion giftset, a notebook thingy, and 3 packs of ferrero rocher chocolates. We always score at my school! | |

				| @lithium- I don't think people are complaining about what they got or didn't get. It's just interesting to see what people scored.
I got a baby blue hand towel embroidered with my school's name

				| I was taken out for a nice lunch. My husband got 200k in vouchers for a sporting-goods store, but doesn't fit into anything there (he's very tall with big feet) so I got some nice hiking boots and thick socks. | |

Sharing is indeed nice, Patrick. I agree.......

.......so perhaps you could enlighten me as to why the last two high schools I've worked for have neglected to give any kind of Chuseok or Sollal gift to any foreign member of staff, while giving every Korean staff member (including janitors!!) generous envelopes or gift packs.

Is that not strange? You think that would fly in a reverse situation in the West?

It's not an envy thing. I don't covet the Koreans their gifts......it's the principle of the thing. I just think it shows horrible short-sightedness and poor managerial stye.

				| Such is life.
They, in my opinion, did something slightly rude. It happens.

I never faced that issue myself when I worked in Korea as we got gifts at chuseo, new years and teachers day at the schools I worked for. At these schools, we had good relationships between the Korean and foreign staff so perhaps that helped.

I know a few people who showed no interest in anything korean (culture wise) and sometimes got nothing at chuseok as theb Korean staff there assumed they were not interested in the holiday anyway.

 There will be variations.

In the WEST, we have no gifting tradition for holidays in the workplace. Some places organize a gift exchange for christmas but thats about it and its nothing as widespread as teachers day. Different places, different norms.

Not about to jump into an argument over this however...too much chuseok planning to do here this weekend as we have a big activity with the K-community.

cheers and enjoy your holiday eamo.

				| nothing from my current univ, not sure about the korean staff since we are a big univ, which is fine by me because at my last univ we would get something from the admin but the korean teachers in my dept would get more like bottles of wine and gift certs much to mine and my colleagues chagrin because they would give the stuff right in front of our faces like we didnt exist...

I've never worked anywhere back west that didn't give a Christmas bonus. Secret Santas are arranged per workplace, but bonuses are pretty much the norm. Not sure where in the west you're talking about.
