Hey!

My name is Mitch and I have finally got a job in South Korea. I found out a couple of weeks ago that I will be moving to Ulsan on the South East coast of Korea in October. I'm actually really excited for this, been itching to get away from home and start teaching Korea.

I have been looking at forums and some other online blogs about Ulsan and I have seen good things and bad things being said about the place. However, most of these posts are from 2004 - 2008 so I am hoping that the hatred has moved on haha. Can anyone give me a current insight to Ulsan on where the best places to go are (by places I mean pubs, bars, restaurants obviously). Also does anyone know if there is a rugby team in Ulsan? I guess you can tell me about other things like mountains and that as well...

Anyway yeah, I'm pretty pumped for Ulsan regardless of it's apparent bad image. I'll be living near the Ulsan University and will know nobody in the country so if anyone is keen for meeting for a pint let me know!

I got here a month ago. Ulsan is legit. The university district is one of the fun places to go on a drinking night, so your lucky for that location. the other 2 places are old downtown and new downtown. Go to Benchwarmers when you arrive to meet some other foriegners. It is in old downtown.

There are a lot of expats that hang around old downtown on the weekends. There is a soccer team, but i don't know about a rugby team.

Once you get out of the city there are some nice hiking places. It is a fun place to live. there is no need for anyone living in Ulsan to head to Busan on the weekends. All the same stuff is in Ulsan.

Your district has a foreigner friendly bar name purple haze. It is another fun place. Also good food is everywhere there.

Cheers for the info, made me feel more hopeful about Ulsan! Do you really think that if you live in Ulsan there is not much need in going to Busan? When I was applying I was trying hard to get a job in Busan. Purple Haze sounds like a coffeeshop in Amsterdam haha, will be sure to check it out.

i've lived in ulsan for 1.5 years and busan for .5 years. from my experience I like living in ulsan but playing in busan (only 40 mins to haeundae by car). if you have any questions shoot me a pm

i've in busan about three weeks with epik. I went to ulsan for a game of football and i know there are lots of soccer teams in the area if you're into that. Some of my friends from orientation are in ulsan and loving it also, so i wouldn't be to worried about the bad image it has.

In relation to busan, i took the speed train from ulsan to busan and it took approx 20 minutes and cost 8,000 won. That's nothing if you want to get out of ulsan for a day on the weekend. There is another train which takes about an hour but stops at heundae station.

Thanks for all the information guys, good to hear about my future home. I've got another question, what's the deal with "deskwarming". I've read quite a few blogs and it is mentioned quite a lot and I was wondering if all schools have a holiday where teachers still have to come in and basicallly do nothing. I will probably regret this eventually but it sounds bliss to me right now haha.

Welcome to Ulsan. It's nice here, good beeches and easy to get around. Plenty of foreigners here also.
