I heard YBM is the best, but yesterday I used it to look up "brawl" on a Korean friend's phone, and it was defined as 말다툼. This seemed like an incorrect definition. 말 = speech/words, and 다툼 = conflict, correct? From reading the definition, the Korean friend seemed to think "brawl" referred solely to verbal disagreement. (Korean speakers help me out; I could be wrong. Was this the best equivalent for the word "brawl"?)

I was just about to buy YBM for $14.99, but this gave me pause. Is there a better app available for the iPhone at the moment? Or is YBM the best of the best?

YBM is excellent, for a Korean to English dictionary.

Unlike French/English or Spanish/English, Korean/English is quite complicated. Often there is no direct translation. Because you live in Korea, you will be able to check with Koreans when using new words. This is a huge advantage.

My normal pattern is to learn the words, but I never use the words unless I have heard a Korean person using that word in that context.

If you have an unlimited data plan, as most people in Korea do, I would also download the Naver app. You can use it for translations. However, it requires Internet access.

Meanings are tricky things, but the better a handle you get on them, the better you'll understand how Koreans think.

I like NEWACE English-Korean/Korean-English (DioDict 3), thought ometimes I feel like it's a little too much. My old crappy phone had a dictionary and would basically give me a word translations, so if I looked up eat I would get 먹다, but this one seems like a full blown dictionary with definitions and whatnot (mostly in Korean).

OK, I just bought YBM. It appears there is audio pronunciation for the English words, but not the Korean words.

It there another version I can buy that has accompanying audio for the Korean words?

I have the YBM one, nd I have a "DioDict" one but it says its by "Prime", not "Newace".
For users whose primary language is English.
They both suck!!!!!
I'd be curious if anyone knows of any others. I don't think any seem to exist that are aimed towards English speakers learning Korean.
However there many great apps that help learn Korean, but just not a dictionary or translator.

NEWACE English-Korean/Korean-English (DioDict 3), has pronunciation for the Korean words, but they're computer generated which seems to be passable for the words that I know, but sometimes it just doesn't sound right.

The difference between the Prime and Newace versions of DioDict is that the Newace version is universal for both the iPad and iPhone, it's also a little newer.

I don't agree that it sucks, but's it's definitely geared towards a Korean person learning English as all the definitions are in Korean. I would say if you have a basic to decent understanding of Korean, it's helpful because you can see how to use the words and expressions.

I bought the YBM dictionary on Chet's recommendation, but I'm disappointed in it. In my opinion it sucks. I won't discount the possiblility that maybe it really is the best dictionary app out there, but it definately leaves a lot to be desired. (Many words are missing from the dictionary that should be there.)

I'm surprised to hear that, but I don't doubt that some words are missing. What words were you unable to find?

If there is a better offline dictionary, I've yet to find it. Let me know if you find one!
