Korean men run funny. I run next to the river a lot, I notice Korean men have a funny way of running for exercise. They kind of do this bow-legged, feet turned out, humped over, shuffle run. It's very odd to see. It's not just one or two either. About 80% of the men I see running do it this way. The rest run normally. And I point out men, because I don't think I've ever seen women run. They just usually power walk.

I see a lot of fat Korean high school boys these days. It think it's because of fast food restaurants and that their favorite hobby is sitting in pc bangs playing starcraft. I wonder if the fat ones still have to do their military service after high school?

Why is golf seen as a way to stay fit here? I mean, golf is synonymous with old fat dudes smoking cigars and drinking beers back home. Yet here, a lot of gyms have golf screens and its seen by many Koreans that if they want to lose weight, they should take up golf? Why not basketball? It's certainly cheaper and you will lose weight a lot faster than hitting a little ball with a stick.

Korean women have really strange taste in shoes. The latest fashion trend are this heavy solid concrete block things that looked wrapped to the ankle and leg with different colored ace bandage. Before that it was the "Roman sandal" with a solid back that stretched from the heel to the calf.

Most foreign men I see hear are unshaven and sloppy. Guys, I know you think you look like a rock star, but in reality you just look like a university student that hasn't learned how to take care of himself yet. Most foreign women I see here, are fat. Some are just chubby. But some are right proper fatties. It must be difficult for them here. They don't have much to choose from in terms of foreign men, and Korean men aren't really attracted to foreign women. And on top of that, this is a society obsessed with good looks. I kind of feel bad for them.

I never run for the bus or the train. I don't understand why people do. There will always be another one 2-5 minutes later. Always. So if you're already late, rushing to make this bus/train rather than that one isn't going to make much of a difference. You're already late. Why be late and sweaty?

The girl that does the live report from Seoul on CNBC is hot. Just, wow.

Korean children are pampered far too much. They get babied and mothered excessively at home and by teachers at school. I think women are too soft to be teachers anyways. Kids don't need 4 or 5 moms, which is what they get from Korean teachers.

Korean food is healthy for the most part. So I don't get why LouisIV is paranoid about eating it. Koreans cook with a lot of oil. That's fine, you need fat in your diet. But mixing fat and carbs (rice) is bad. So just skip the rice and your good.

I have yet to figure out how some of my fellow foreigners here live on W500,000 a month. I don't drink at all, I rarely eat out, I don't shop, or see movies, or go on spending sprees. I live a rather boring life, but still spend a million won a month without blinking.

I have a theory: Koreans are obsessed with good teeth, because the Japanese have bad teeth. Koreans love dogs, because the Japanese love cats. Japan's soccer team is blue, Korea's is red. Japanese are notoriously polite (to your face), therefore Korean ajummas and ajushis are notoriously rude. I think we could start a rumor about Japanese here and Koreans would start doing the opposite. Any ideas?

I think Dokdo belongs to Korea. However, I don't think the Japanese really care. I think they just use it to manipulate Koreans and get under their skin from time to time.

The level of English in this country is, surprisingly, on the rise. On an average day, you usually only met educated people with basic English, like dentists, pharmacists, office workers, etc. Now, I see 7-11 workers, bus drivers, and random people poses a basic understanding of English. I'd be willing to bet my ridiculous salary 8 out of 10 random middle/high school students you see on the street could have a at least a very basic conversation with you. It's really made me quite lazy about learning Korean.

I really like the Korean healthcare system. I think it spanks the pants off the American system. I pay 30 bucks a month and get guaranteed coverage. No physical, no "pre-qualifying exams", I don't have to worry if an insurance company is going to drop me if I get sick, and there is almost no surgery I wouldn't have here (if I need surgery for something.) I wish all those decrying "socialized medicine" as the end of the Western world back home could come here and live under this system for 6 months. I know they would change their minds.

I think I could pull a bus by rope, like they do in strong man competitions.

I used to tell my Korean friends and university students, while discussing America's obesity problem, that Korea had better watch out, or the same thing will happen to them. I can see it happening.

Very entertaining random thoughts. I foresee lots of defensiveness in this thread.

I agree with your assessment of the dudes. I mean, think about how teachers dress back home. The good ones, I mean. Dress like a teacher. Neat and professional. It's not hard. If you complain about not being treated with respect, maybe it's because you dress like a surfer with a hangover when you go to work? Think about it.

As for foreign women, don't be so quick. Many Korean dudes like a bit of the exotic just like we do. Makes it easier to overlook details like bodyfat. At the end of the day, you can still brag about nailing a "foreign" chick. =) Yarr! Conquest! Wink

Good list, although I disagree about the health care. For one, I pay a lot more than $30 a month. The allergy immunotherapy medicine I'm taking is very expensive and not covered by insurance and the hospital where I go doesn't offer any alternatives.

Plus, if you have surgery, you're going to pay. Plus, nurses do very little and you might need someone to stay with you depending on your after-surgery condition. It's weird to see patients on crutches having to return their food trays.

The health insurance is cheap here, but I doubt it's 30 bucks. As for the quality, if I was dying and had to have surgery here then I'd have it but I'd much rather have it back home. I suppose the insurance is good if you didn't any any back home, but if you had a decent plan then the Korean option loses some if it's luster.

Yeah, there are loads of Korean guys that are attracted to foreign women. Some of them can't even distinguish who is actually good-looking Shocked I find that the men are especially aggressive in Seoul--I get hit on way less in my city of Daejeon, but it still happens pretty frequently... >.<

Girls in the UK wore those Roman sandals too. Not just a Korean thing

Plenty of good points otherwise. Too many of the foreign women here create a terrible image of our countries. Some of the people I see must be putting away 6 meals a day, it's disgusting

You're doing something wrong then. You should start writing down what you spend to get some control over your decadent lifestyle

A careful reading of your 'thoughts' by the lard asses is going to get you in a lot of hot water with the ladies in Korea teaching the Englishee.

But I agree 100% Very Happy

Just to add another thought: It's not so bad that they're 100kg overweight, it's the fact that they dress like they're still in high school, trying to show that skin - that makes it so bad. And when Koreans call them on it (in public, like a subway for example), they get all defensive and whine about it on web forums. For example, a woman that weighs 190lbs and is under 5 feet tall, should not be wearing tight shorts and exposing her breasts in a tshirt that is 3 sizes too small. It's just NOT RIGHT.

oh you're in trouble now! But I agree. Most foreign women don't seem to look after themselves. Many would seem to have a condition. It only happened twice ever that I saw a Western woman that could compare to almost any Korean woman in skin quality, physique, feminine ways (this is the big upset really). The most disturbing are the women that just insist on being tomboys to show those Korean gals how to be unfeminine. If American women had their way, the Korean women would end up becoming big nobly kneed rugby players, and then English teaching in Korea would become fully anal.

They're all over China too. The length just covered the ankle with a zipper at the back.

I suppose I have to except this as I dish out insults to most foreign women below.

Oh, they do care. They weren't pleased when Korean Air flew their maiden A380 flight to Dokdo.

I wouldn't believe everything you hear from 'my fellow foreigners here'. However, you can live very frugally. From what I've read of those that do, they buy allot in bulk and look for coupons and discounts for everything. They don't use their AC's very much if at all, don't buy bottled water, they use filters, and use surge protectors to save power. The one I fail on is the AC. I don't use that all the time either, but sometimes I have to have it. I also eat out more than I'd like but I'll always eat out a little bit.

It's called a beard; I've had one for a decade, and I don't feel the need to shave it just work in a public school. Besides most of my Males teachers had facial hair of some kind when I went to school. It's only a big deal here because most Korean men couldn't grow a beard if they tried.

On a couple of occasions, after some serious poker melt-downs, I've survived for nearly a month on less than W100,000. It can be done if it's really necessary.

yes they do. they go, get completely destroyed self-esteem wise by the fit, popular, and older guys in the service and then finish with almost no morale. they do however have a cheeseburger and a pc waiting for them.

a large majority of the teachers here ARE university students that haven't learned to take care of themselves yet or aren't far removed from it. and the women. ugh. going down that road is a slippery slope. surprisingly, i have seen a handful of kguys who seem to love the chubbies. plus most of these women who can't get a date in korea do have their pickings in the choicest of the lot, the american military personnel.

spending a mil a month is even being frugal in my opinion. i feel sorry for the people who come here and do live off 500k a month because they don't seem to realize that it takes money to make money. someone didn't just sit and come up with that adage for kicks. while these people are out scraping pennies the smart ones are out networking and creating many situations to make much more money and having fun to boot. the irony of it all is that the penny pinchers are here to save money yet could potentially make much more by NOT being cheap asses with their immediate hard currency. life is brutally humourless at times.

edit: just as an example, i know a lot of the guys who come here who are frugal game on their pc's to save money. i was at a party last month where a large group of the blizzard korea team as well as some of the original team from blizzard america starcraft 1 days were. although i don't want to work in the video game industry and wasn't buttering them up to get to those ends, we all drank together and i got business cards from all of them and gave them my cards and made a great impression. i would say a 10 dollar drink and talking with the creators of the game was worth way more than sitting at home playing the game itself.

absolutely. if you don't need anything super specialized and don't mind taking random packs of pills and getting a shot in the ass every time you have an illness, it really is way superior to the american system.
