Dave's: If you aren't clad in chinos+short sleeve button down on the weekdays and dad jeans+polo on the weekend, you shouldn't be "taken seriously."

I've been getting curious about what draws 30something conservatives to Korea to teach English. Adjosshis-in-waiting?

I think the subculture thing is a red herring. Some people are down on people who like looking fashionable or enjoy clothes as to them it's frivolous and shallow. Maybe goth etc is viewed as particularly teenage.

Thing is older people who like fashion don't like it in the same way as a 14 yr old girl. Yes being all obsessed with it and having no depth would be sad but it's a strawman. People just sensibly like wearing nice things.

Historically speaking, the gothic subculture was never for teens or children.

Taken as a whole, adult goths dress more formally than their non-goth peers. The largest modern goth fashion styles are probably Neo-Victorian (extremely formal), Steampunk (frequently formal), and Elegant Gothic Aristocrat (also formal). Honestly, if you think that all goths dress like children, I really don't know who you're looking at.

As far as people dressing similarly, it's the same in *any* subculture. Are you also upset that sports fans wear sports jerseys? What about music fans wearing band t-shirts and jeans? These subcultures arguably dress more like teenagers than goths do. If you *do* have issues with everyone who doesn't dress in a manner that you find "adult", it's probably your problem, not anyone else's.

To me though its all just symptomatic of spoiled, obnoxious westerners.
Most countries have real lives to lead. I mean they are too busy surviving or out making a living. they don't have the luxury of remaining teenagers well into their 20's and inventing ridiculous fancy dress identities to make them feel superior.
Sure its ok for teenagers who need to rebel and belong I guess... but after that then its just stoopid.

Yep, in less than 24 hours.

I thought we all already were a subculture in this country.

Subcultures are for childish westerners who never grow up. Isn't it a bit daft to still be putting on fancy dress to feel important when you're in your 20's and 30's?

lol, enjoy your conformity.

I can agree that fashion subcultures are due to us being spoiled and not having to worry about surviving since making money is pretty easy for us compared to some others in the world. However, what do you suppose we move our attention to?

If you are suggesting that we should put all of our "fashion sense" efforts into curing cancer instead, than it would be a somewhat valid point. However, you seem to be suggesting that we should spend more time worrying about working (even though there is no need to since our needs of survival are easily being met) since a luxury of any sort outside of making money seems to bother you.

I guess you can worry about making money and I'll worry about enjoying my life through other outlets, such as art (fashion, installations, music, love, etc.).

The reason most people join countercultures is to shun pop culture and the values it pushes on us. If you think counterculture is weird, just take a good long look at the garbage that the mainstream is circulating. What's more spoiled, watching terrible reality TV shows about horrible people doing questionable things, or picking up a guitar and making your own music?

There is a bit of everything in this country, whether you're a hipster, a punk, a goth, someone who likes those things but doesn't dress up, and any well-adjusted foreigners are welcome to get involved. It's small, intimate, and almost exclusively found in Hongdae.

-goth
They don't have events very often, but there are a few goth bands.

-straight edge
You just missed the Sick of It All tour. Not sure if they're straight-edge, but the Geeks who opened for them are.

-rockabilly
This weekend is the 23rd Kimchibilly event. Rock Tigers aren't great, but Dolphin Kick from Japan are amazing.

-punk
There are a few punk shows this weekend, but the best shows will all be grindcore or crust. The Japanese/Brazilian band Darge is playing two shows in Hongdae, and a band whose name rhymes with Christbuck is playing a show in a squat in Myungdong.

@bekinseki - thanks for the info. Is there somewhere to look for those kind of listings, or do you have to have contacts?

The idea that other people have different loves/hates/insecurities/strengths/thoughts than yourself is perplexing? The idea that people don't dress up to impress their peers bothers you that much that you guys have to jump into someone's thread and tell them that they're childish? Who is the one that needs to "grow up"?

I wasn't saying that subcultures are wrong/childish nor was I saying that it's wrong to follow your heart when it comes time to choose your wardrobe. I like when people express themselves.

I was simply saying that trying to be a goth or trying to be a punk or trying to be a hipster or trying to be a ___________ by wearing the appropriate uniform is adolescent. It's a phase many of us go through and grow out of. What would you think of a 30-year-old that was still trying really hard to look goth? I'd think they were immature. It isn't expressing oneself, it's hoping on a giant bandwagon.

It's one thing when an adult has their own fashion sense. It's another thing when they're still actively trying to fit in the label of 'goth' or 'punk' or what have you with the way they dress. It's sad.

Adults know that you don't have to wear a uniform to be an individual.

How is that different from being a rocker type in your late 20s or early 30s? Everyone is into different things. Being a rocker (in the past) was more mainstream than being a goth. However, why do you care what they want to do? You're trying to judge them and trash them. I'd say you're being insecure by judging them. The OP simply asked about where he/she could find such things. He/she was not looking to be trashed by you, so you could feel better about yourself today.
In England, there are plenty of older punks and they've been there for ages. Just mind your own business and leave them folks alone.
