It's kinda funny and kinda sad that the Korean Herald neglected to mention in the entire article that he his infact ethnically Korean. The title tried to make it sound that Americans were jumping on the Dokdo bandwagon...but no it's just another Korean.

Reminds me of the Article about the Middle School girl in Seoul who got a perfect score in the TOEFL exam without mentioning that the school she attended was infact an exclusive foreign school in Seoul with 100% English medium teaching. That article tried to imply it was her effort and reading alone that got her there.

Quote:
A teenage American environmentalist was named a PR ambassador for Koreas easternmost islets of Dokdo, a local government official said Wednesday.

North Gyeongsang Province said Jonathan Lee will engage in a campaign to raise international awareness that the rocky outcroppings are Korean territory. Lee was given a certificate recognizing his position from Kim Kwan-yong, governor of the province Dokdo belongs to.

The 14-year-old plans to visit Dokdo and Ulleung Island on the East Sea from Thursday to Saturday, according to provincial officials. He will also participate in a variety of events aimed at promoting Koreas sovereignty over Dokdo around the globe.

On top of that, Jonathan will visit a primary school in Ulleung to promote the significance of protecting the environment. He is the founder of the International Cooperation of Environmental Youth (ICEY), an international environmental group that provides educational activities and tools to children.

He has attracted global attention since 2007 when he ran an online cartoon, titled Go Greenman, highlighting the importance of environmental preservation. He has also launched a global campaign on the Internet to encourage children to plant one tree every year.

Many world leaders, including U.S. President Barrack Obama, have openly expressed their support for his campaign. In August last year, he proposed the creation of a peace forest to North Korean leader Kim Jong-il.

Other news agencies, such as MSNBC, didn't feel compelled to reveal his ethnic background either, so why hold the Herald to a different standard?

Plus, his last name is Lee. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to guess that he is likely Asian and more specifically either Korean or Chinese.

Fact is, he's an American citizen who lives in Mississippi with his Korean-American father and caucasian mother. How many generations will it take before you consider him an American? Or are all Asian-Americans forever foreigners to you?

Can't find the MSNBC story online.

Lee is also a european name.

The most misleading part of the Korean Herald article was the title. The article didn't make it clear he was actually ethnically Korean - his father was born in Korea.

So?

Is he American or isn't he?

Did he grow up in the States? Does he have an American passport?

If so, he's American to me.

The whole thing over this island is childish in comparison to other problems in the world, so one has to ask why such an individual would have specific concerns about something so minor. No doubt has to do with his father being ethnically Korean.

Pretty obvious they are being vague about that and the newspaper, or author, has an agenda of sorts.

Do I care? Not really.

Not the Dokdo story, but same kid...

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/38767128/ns/world_news-asia_pacific/t/us-boy-n-korea-welcomed-my-peace-forest-idea/

BEIJING A 13-year-old American boy who made a rare visit to Pyongyang says officials there welcomed his idea for a "children's peace forest" in the demilitarized zone dividing North and South Korea, although they said it would only happen if the countries signed a peace treaty first.

And people on Dave's complain about Koreans being xenophobic... Rolling Eyes

What's even funnier and sadder is that you apparently think ethnicity overrides citizenship...something people on these forums are always criticizing the Koreans for doing.

I remember reading about that kid. "The Children's Peace Forest", really? What does he expect? Two multi million dollar armies just pull back and leave the most heavily guarded border in the world? What's next, all the little kiddies frolic through the forest with magical fairies guiding them on mythical journeys to undiscovered regions and hidden mountain passes? Kids are dumb. We should not indulge this kind of thinking or behavior. When he came home with that essay his parents should have said "Oh, that's a nice thought, but you're not being very realistic son." At least that's what my parents told me when I said I wanted to invent a cannon that shot huge rocks into space so Earth could have a ring like Saturn.

And the parents.... Christ. They think just because they're kids rights something about North Korea they have to get special permission to go hand it over to Dear Leader himself? Millions of kids write letters to Santa each year, I don't see parents chartering snow mobiles to go hand deliver the things. If you want to do something kid, write a letter to ask that psychopath to stop starving his people and manufacturing drugs and fake American money. Ask him to start being a contributing member of a global society or if he can't, just end his miserable existence from this planet asap.

An American with Korean ancestry, a fact that is not exactly irrelevant to the story.

Right.

Jeez.....the bickering that goes on here.....it's pretty open and shut that he's an American citizen with a pro-Korean tendency due to his ancestry.....he doesn't have to be defined as wholly 'American' or wholly 'Korean'.

I must admit, when hearing this story over the radio during Chuseok, about a boy from Mississippi that wrote about Dokdo and was taking a trip to see it, it sounded pretty weird. After seeing his picture and name, not so much.

I mean, yeah, let's be real. Who he was is not exactly who I was picturing.

On the other hand...

This is also very true.

I do think there should be some consistency. Either the boy is American or he isn't.

And either people with "Korean Blood" (whatever that means) are in "Real Koreans" or they aren't.

Frankly I think citizenship should be what determines that. But hey, I guess there are elements in both societies who feel that 'Korean' or 'American' should be whoever fits their mental image.

Just be fair.

This article clearly states his father is Korean. I wonder why they don't mention his mother's ethnicity? It just says his mother is American. liveinkorea316, aren't you curious what his mother's ethnicity is too? Or are you just trying to find articles that brings out your own racism?
